Gaz Wrote:WGU has a pre-licensure BSN program. Many of the general education and prereq courses can be fulfilled through testing and Straighterline. There is a clinical component to the program which is in part, as Rebel mentioned, why the program is only available in specific states. The classroom work is online but clinicals are done the same as in a traditional nursing program. Many hours with a clinical instructor/preceptor at a hospital taking care of patients, developing skills, and using the online concepts to create care plans that demonstrate an understanding of all aspects of your patient's condition.
I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and eligible for the Excelsior program. Though, in my state at the time the BON would only allow Excelsior graduates that were LPNs prior to attending. I was also eligible to take the NCLEX-PN in several states. All of these situations came with limitations. I do not feel comfortable with limitations. In hindesight, there are things I did as a Corpsman that many nurses will never experience or understand. And though I spent over a year on a med/surg floor taking care of patients, starting IVs, passing meds, dressing changes, etc. it in no way prepared me to be an RN.
Are there any nursing programs in your friend's area?
Thanks for sharing. There are Nursing Programs in my friend's area but getting in the program you have to wait for five years, that's why she was looking for other options.

I had friends that did medic school just to be eligible for a medic to RN program....locally these tend to be much easier to get into. And of course that would make EC doable.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this). Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

EC told her that she has to have LPN license or a paramedic license to get into their online RN program
