Okay, I finished SL's English Comp I and started II but I cannot in good conscience read Frankenstein. I read just a little bit of it, but as a Christian I just can't bring myself to continue reading it. So, I asked SL if I could use a different book, but they won't allow that.
Is there any other way to get my three credits in English Composition II?
TIA

Is there a reason why you can't read it? I thought that one of the deeper messages was to demonstrate what happens if man goes too far and plays God.
I hadn't ever heard of this text being objected to by my Christian friends, so I googled it. I didn't find a lot about it, but here is one review: Angel/Satan Relationship in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein :: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
Sorry.. I know you're asking for alternatives to English Comp II, but I'm just wondering if this book is really anti-Christian.
Edit to add - I found this reference to a Frankenstein guide on a Christian book site -http://www.deepershopping.com/item/calvin-roso/frankenstein-study-guide/84070.html

The reason why is not that I can't read it, it's that I don't want to read it. I don't like to put horror type stuff in my brain. To me (okay, it's probably just me), Frankenstein doesn't fit the picture of Philippians 3:16: "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableâif anything is excellent or praiseworthyâthink about such things."
I think I could spend my time doing more valuable things than reading Frankenstein.

Yes, I totally know what you mean.. I'm not Christian, but I agree with not putting junk into my brain. I refuse to watch horror movies for the same reason.. I just don't like them.
Lol.. I guess if you follow Philippians 3:16 to the letter, there is probably quite a bit that you wouldn't want to do. heee hee I would mention Principles of Finance and Money & Banking as the tests I would need to exclude for being neither excellent nor praiseworthy hilarious
Anyhow... I still am not convinced that it's a bad thing for Christians to read, but that's beside the point. What about taking the CLEP college composition? Could you also get the credits by taking the (IMHO very easy) technical writing DSST?

Since the point of this forum is to offer solutions to individual student requirements, there's no need to question particular motivations even though I personally would rate Shelley's Frankenstein as a classic work of science fiction. I also found the Straighterline English Composition II course pretty fundamental to increasing my essay-writing capabilities.
If you're a TESC student and require 6 credits in English Composition, your options are either to take the College Composition CLEP or take the English Composition II course with TESC or another college.
Best of luck.

Okay, Thanks burbuja and irnbru. I'm thinking that I'll try my hand at the CLEP College Composition. Do you know if the CLEP essays have to be 5 paragraphs?

Not sure but it would probably be recommended. You can always split paragraphs and there's nothing wrong with short paragraphs provided you cover the material? Dropping one of the central paragraphs would probably be fine.
I posted a general structure for writing papers here which has served me well. It can be expanded or contracted depending on your needs.

Try watching the original Exorcist Movie in the dark by yourself, then try going to sleep alone. Now that was scary. The part when she walks down the stairs bent backwards was especially freaky.
Sorry this didn't help with your ENG Comp II question, but as mentioned, go for the CLEP.

I need English Comp II as well for TESC. Technical writing will not cover it. So I was wondering the same thing. Do we need to take with essay since we already have English Comp I?

Yes, TESC will not give you credit for ENG Comp II unless you take the CLEP w/ Essay. Technical writing is counted as a Humanities or General Ed Elective (ENG 201) at TESC, but will not satisfy ENC-102.
