Need Business Credits
#1
Hi Everyone!

I need some help planning things out. I am looking to make a career change and the positions I am looking at require 24 business credits. I already have a Bachelors in Psychology, Minor in Secondary Education, Minor in Sociology and a Masters in School Counseling (major career change here lol). What would you guys recommend as the easiest, quickest, most cost effective Business courses? Eventually I might go on and get my MBA and some business certificates after I've been in the job for a bit.

Thanks in advance!!! I would be lost without this site!

What type of credits? Ones that are more widely accepted like CLEP then DSST. Or any thing from ACE? Is there a specific program you want to apply them to or is there a specific MBA you plan to enroll in?

Welcome to the boards! I would recommend CLEP exams, DSST exams have quite a few choices to chose from. Than there is always Straighterline courses. Question is do you just need any random business credits or do you need 24 credits for an MBA pre req, or are these credits so you qualify to teach business at a high school level? I know I had to have certain courses done for my MBA pre req.

Thanks for your replies guys! I am looking into jobs in Supply Chain Management mostly. MBA prereqs would be awesome. I have looked into a couple online MBA programs and am leaning toward the Penn State world campus one. I would probably end up getting a certificate in Supply Chain Management as well.

The job I am looking into just specifies that they are looking for 24 business credits, so that's all I have to go off of!

i guess I would start with taking CLEP and DSST exams first. Most transferable to schools. Not sure what your Penn program requires for pre reqs. I am sure you will need accounting and stats for entry into the program. But DSST Org Behavior, Intro to Business , Business Ethics, & Principles of Supervision are not that hard. When do you need them all done by?

Might find some useful info here:

Earning Penn State Credit through the College-Level Examination Program - Undergraduate Admissions
Earn Penn State Credit through DSST Examinations - Undergraduate Admissions

The Penn State MBA online program is suitable for individuals of diverse academic and professional backgrounds and requires no prerequisite course work. However, previous course work in accounting, economics, math, and statistics, or knowledge of these subjects gained through work experience, adds to the strength of your application portfolio.

I would make sure that you've done the prereq's for another program, since that one doesn't specifically tell you what they want. You may end up somewhere else, so you'll want the courses that will work anywhere. College Algebra, Stats, Micro and Macroecon, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Management, Marketing, Finance - those are all pretty common prereq's at most programs, so that's where I'd start. You can always go pick up some additional courses if you need to later.

You could also look into the EdX/MIT Supply Chain program. The first 5 classes are done online (total cost $1350) and then the next 5 on campus at MIT (total cost ?)

The unknown part you would need to research is whether you could get MIT credit for the first 5 courses if you didn't do the second 5 on campus. I'm guessing probably not, but worth asking I suppose

Be sure your employer will accept alternative credit like CLEPs or ACE courses before you spend tons of time on them. Hate to see you waste time and money.
