EC Self-Paced Courses/Degrees
#1
Quote:Cengage Learning and Excelsior College today announced Engage-Learning-Logo a partnership to create an innovative, low-cost, alternative pathway to college credit. The core of the collaboration will be a set of self-paced digital courses – using Engage Learning market leading content – each with integrated diagnostic and formative assessments, as well as a college credit bearing summative exam – developed by Excelsior’s Center for Educational Measurement, among the most respected higher education assessment organizations.

The program, which will be delivered online via the Learning Objects Difference Engine platform, will initially focus on two degree pathways – an associates in criminal justice, and an MBA, with plans to expand to other subjects and degrees in the near future. Students will have access to each digital course and its college credit exam for one low price and, upon successful completion, will earn college credit from Excelsior College, for use towards a degree program at Excelsior or for transfer to any accredited institution accepting such transfer credit. This innovative, self-paced program will be open to anyone desiring a flexible and low cost way to earn college credits to enhance their skills and career opportunities.

The program will be available in March 2017. Costs will range from $400 to $550, depending on the subject.

Interesting. $400-550 is cheap for a graduate course, but a lot more than Straighterline, CLEP, most Uexcels, DSST, TECEP, Tor College Credits, etc.

Expensive for an AA in CJ, but cheap for an MBA.

There are already plenty of inexpensive options available for the CJ degree, including Propero/Pearson for those more difficult to find courses.

I would still like to hear about the Liberal Arts Capstone credit-by-exam option that they mentioned a few months ago. I think a CBE Capstone would make Excelsior much more enticing as an option over TESU/ COSC for some people.

They sort of vaguely mentioned it in the article, and it sounds like EC is going toward a Cengage-based platform.

I don't think thats their main focus, anymore. I think the school will stay true to its origin, and whats its known for, but outside of that the bread and butter of EC is now actual courses. People are preferring courses over exams.
