Do FEMA credits alter your GPA?
#1
I am wanting to finish my undergrad at EC then apply to grad school. I have 94 hours thru a university here in OK already. I know that if I test out of psych classes with the gre my gpa will stay the same but yet at the same time it'd be nice to have a higher gpa to apply to grad school with. What I'm wondering is if I take FEMA courses and send them to TESC (cuz it's cheaper) are their letter grades given for FEMA that can reflect a nice high gpa on the TESC transcript???? Then if I test out of the psych degree at EC (done for ease and quickness) can I then take those FEMA credits earned on the TESC transcript (which I never present to EC for credit) along with my EC degree and OK university transcript and have the overall combined undergrad gpa from EC, TESC, and local univ be higher because of the fema credits on the tesc transcript???? I guess this is semi complicated but if they're legitimate credits I would think they'd help raise my overall gpa adding to the grades from all three universities????
I guess I'm wanting my cake and eat it too. I want to be able to get my degree done quickly by not taking classes or ECE to raise my gpa but instead use the gre AND have a higher gpa for grad school consideration.
Do you guys think this will work and does anyone have experience doing this? Big Grin

No, neither FEMA or any other Pass/Fail CLEP or DSST exam will affect your overall GPA. EC does reuire you to have established a sufficient number of graded classes or exams to provide you a GPA.

Whoa....slow down.
Every time you transfer, you are likely to lose something. Going back and forth between your local university, EC, and TESC is no different. Even if you don't lose credit, you'll lose money and time!

You said you want to finish your degree at EC, are you enrolled now?

If you enroll at TESC, all of your university classes come over as CREDIT, not grades. That gives you an open slate to work with. All FEMA, CLEP, and DSST will also come in as CREDIT.

In my opinion, if you have only about 25ish credits remaining, enroll at TESC (assuming you're not already at EC) and take TESC classes to finish up in 2 semesters. Finish strong with A's and you can graduate with a 4.0

*when you apply to grad school, they are still going to "find out" about your other classes because they will request ALL OF your transcripts from every school you ever went to. Don't stress, there are tons of grad schools out there and many have open enrollment. If you want a masters- there are hundreds of options- high or low GPA.

Hi! What is the minimum number of graded credits required by EC to calculate a GPA? I looked in the Liberal Arts Catalog but didn’t find the answer. Also, is it true that Excelsior uses the grades from transferred classes for the transcript and GPA? Thanks a lot.

As someone who raised their GPA from around 2.2 to 3.01 without taking any courses with Excelsior, I did the following. I took Excelsior exams, which are calculated into your GPA, the same as Excelsior courses. If you get two A's, then your Excelsior GPA is listed as 4.0. Now you still have a cumulative GPA at Excelsior, which includes previous courses that are transferred in and exams. Look at your 94 credits that you have accumulated up until this point. Eliminate the D's, by taking CLEP and DANTES tests to offset them. If you earned a D in History up to 1865, then CLEP out of that exact course. When you are trying to raise your GPA to 3.0, eliminating D's and C's is just as important as scoring a couple of A's. I offset 5 D's by taking CLEP's that replaced/superseded them on the transcript, then scored well on graded exams.

WOW YA'LL! that's really alot of good info to think about. Got some thinkin to do now. I feel like I've read this website, google searches, exam websites, ec, tesc sites til my eyeballs are about to pop out. lol. Too bad the fema classes, well any of those exams are pass/fail cuz in some cases it'd sure be nice to get grades but I can see how it can be strategically nice for them to be pass/fail too.
for geezer, if there is a d grade in a class called survey of math then you take college math by clep does that cancel out survey of math or is it just added since their names are different but cover the same things?
did you find the ECEs hard? i think some of us psych ourselves up too much and that includes me but i know it'll be ok because there are too many of you here who are wonderful success stories. if you take an ECE and get a d can you take that same ECE over and have that better grade replace the first or does it list both?

In my case, the answer is yes, it superseded the D. The ECE's are a little more difficult, but if you know that going in, you prepare accordingly. Excelsior gives grades on many of the DANTES exams....that is where you rack up the A's. Intro to Business, Intro to Supervision etc...pick an area that you are comfortable with.

Can anyone tell me which clep and dantes can receive a letter grade from Excelsior? I was looking at their guide to college credit by exam publications page and now everytime I try to look at it it leaves all the dantes clep info and changes to a blank screen. I don't know if it's my computer or their website. I wouldn't have asked you all this out of laziness and I do appreciate your answers.

As memory serves, EC no longer gives letter grades for CLEP (they did a few years ago) but still gives letter grades for most (if not all?) DSST exams.
