Degree planning advice
#41
For the English test, I believe you can do the Duolingo English Test. I would verify with them, but if you can do the DET then it's relatively quick/easy and not unlike the ACTFL (as far as I'm aware). Unlike TOEFL, etc., you don't have to travel to a testing center. See https://umaine.edu/international/undergr...dmissions/ for more information.

This link is for U of M not UMPI. There maybe some differences. Definitely confirm with Shea as she will be the one who has the correct info.

The UMPI site does (or did) lead to that page if you go around and around enough. YourPace is, unfortunately, not very well set up for intake of international students. It mostly points to the main UMPI information which then (in at least some instances) has pointed at the main University of Maine site.

And that's why I always refer international students to Shea. Shea is the YourPace Admissions Coordinator. She takes care of all new students.

Well, Shea returned with a list and Duolingo is accepted. Regarding evaluation services she mentioned any NACES or AICE member will get accepted. She tends to answer really short. Had to ask her if the evaluation needs to be a general one or must include GPA and yes GPA needs to be included....

meanwhile I finished BUS312: Advanced Operations Management and BUS303: Management Information Systems on study.com and waiting for the grades. I will now switch to the resume, duolingo and evaluation service.

Yet, my high school has to reply. Most evaluation services need THEM to email my HS diploma there. Other options include sealed envelopes and such. Looks like that evaluating will cause most headaches to me. Found WES is really tricky, doesn't "know" my highschool. Found https://ifcsevals.com/ and they are NACES member and relatively new (2022).

Yes as like the UK we don't have HS diplomas as such just grade slips & maybe subject/exam board certificates. Also everything is given to the student so if a university/employee ask to see then you just hand them to them or make copies etc.

Does umpi require a HS diploma for all international students even if they already have a degree?

My understanding is: international applicants will always need an evaluation service to prove their standings.

For UMPI, I think they no longer require HS stuff if you can prove that you have a degree. If your degree is foreign, you must have it evaluated for acceptability.

fyi, resume has been accepted and processed. Same for the duolingo test which I scored 130 (took the exam completely unprepared)
Now waiting for the HS diploma credential evaluation to be translated and published. Yet the service provider's status is "Evaluation underway". Taking a lot of time these credential evaluators. It's almost 2 weeks now. There was an option for express delivery but I skipped this ofc due to extra costs. For future reference to internationals considering applying to any american university -> get your high school diploma equivalent evaluated really early. Makes the whole university applying process just boring if you skip this task to the end.

Will keep you updated once my status changes...

Just an FYI, most schools take months to admit you, so a couple of weeks in the summer over holiday weeks is not terrible (for most people, this was a 4-day weekend because Independence Day falls on a Tuesday).  People are taking vacations, most schools are partially closed or reduced hours, etc.  Give them a little time, there is a lot to look at in your particular case.
