(Speech was the first thing I dropped from my degree plan when I transferred to EC, too.) The BSLS was an extremely flexible degree; I hope that continues to be true.

I was dreading the speech requirement because the ASNSM I'm completing has the new gen ed requirements. However, the Intro to Communications course at SL was not a bad experience. It's one of the easiest courses I've taken.

I view public speaking classes similar to how many of us view English requirements... something that's so applicable and relevant to the real world that it's worth the extra effort, perhaps even butt-in-seat at a community college. especially if it's something you're uncomfortable with.

I'd never have gotten by in my job without basic presentation skills, and my job isn't a very social one. I mostly just sit in front of a computer all day.

Congrats on your degree! You would think i'm a very talkative person as I like to express myself, however; that's not the case.
I'm an introvert, but due to the job requirements, I am always on the phone with users at work... I like this type of career though...
Change is good, I like to challenge myself. So, it's not a bad idea if you really do need to go through a speech/presentation course.

The non-specific gen ed requirements at EC were a huge plus for me. I was able to focus on my interests, in most cases. All of the practice that I have gotten with "public speaking" (posting) here has really been helpful for my current degree program. I've also learned from this forum about lots of ways to get any further education, like public speaking, that I may need to add in the future.

The Big 3 would not be the same without the wonderful members of this forum sharing info and experiences!

Congrats! EC does get less limelight around here for a variety of reasons but, as you learned, they are light years ahead of many traditional State schools. I may yet attempt their nursing bridge one day

I'm happy for you and your family, sounds life altering and I'm proud this little band of higher education misfits played a little part.

You may be right in that regard. I had to take speech for my associates before finding Excelsior. Funny thing is I had experience speaking in my job but the class still was a little hard on the nerves. It would probably be good for my kid to take it, but that's easy for me to say. My main concern was to keep him on a path he will finish. With no High School diploma a degree is even more important.
