Yeah, that was a big plus for me too. I had two associates with mostly different gen ed requirements. Of course the local school here had different requirements. I smell a racket here. Some of the requirements seem so obscure they probably don't match up with ANY other school.

Yes, that's true. For me, it made the gen eds easier to fulfill, but more importantly for other students it would be a much smoother way to transfer the credits they have already earned.

Funny thing is I had experience speaking in my job but the class still was a little hard on the nerves. It would probably be good for my kid to take it, but that's easy for me to say. My main concern was to keep him on a path he will finish. With no High School diploma a degree is even more important.
Sorry all, I don't mean to butt in and take away from the jovial nature of this thread...but can I ask why your son doesn't have a HS diploma? Homeschooling is legitimate in all 50 states, and a parent can create a transcript and diploma for their child. He can say that he graduated from HS and everything. Just curious, you've hit upon a peeve of mine (I homeschool my kids, so does cookderosa).

I have heard of this but I was concerned with the acceptance. I could create a transcript and a diploma for him, but that doesn't mean an employer is going to consider it legitimate. In fact it might be worse than just saying home schooled. Cookderosa's posts and book is where I got the idea. Once he finishes a degree the diploma/GED/home school question doesn't matter anymore.

Actually, I would urge you to create the transcripts and the HS diploma. I can almost guarantee he will be asked for those at many points along his professional career. I agree in concept that the college degree trumps the HS diploma...but real world will see him dealing with beurocrats and HR teams that won't at all understand that he lacks a HS diploma. Print them up, have him submit them if ever asked and know that you have set him on a good path.
I will add that it would be best to abide by any and all applicable state rules/regs when doing this. The diploma might even read something to the effect: "pursuant to state statute _ _ _ _ _ _ John Doe is hereby granted his HS diploma in the state of _________________"

I hear statements like this and really wonder if working in IT all these years has been working in a bubble divorced from the wider reality. Not once have I been asked for any of this stuff. My professional resume does not have a education section on it, and never has. I have worked for major US corporations including Fortune 500 banks and defense contractors.
FWIW my advice would be.. if the education is really solid, send him to the local community college for a GED exam. What he will be dodging for the rest of his life, in my experience, is the stigma associated with home schooling -- not arguments over largely meaningless paperwork.

My company was acquired 5 years ago, those unable to produce a HS diploma were let go regardless of time in service, experience, or additional education level. I believe the problem is probably solved by 15 minutes with a word processor and two pages from a laser printer. My point was to just get it done.
We could debate the merits either way endlessly.

I'm happy for you and your family, sounds life altering and I'm proud this little band of higher education misfits played a little part.
Congrats again to all three of you!
Excelsior was the King/Queen on this forum back in the days of BAin4weeks. I'm sure as requirements change, either COSC or Excelsior will overtake TESU, or maybe even a new King/Queen will emerge.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.
Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.
Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.
Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.
Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I've never even been asked if I was a HS grad, let alone asked to prove it. And I work for a very major company.
