Daughter's BSBA TESU program - degree plan added

My daughter is currently working on an AA in general business at a California CC.  We have qualified for a fee waiver, so have only had to pay $23 per semester in fees and had to buy her books and parking permit of $20 a semester.  We are going to have her do a second AA in business which is a transfer degree.  The one she is working on now has some non-transferable courses which are job/skill-related.  Anyhow, she will end up with 80 transferable semester units from both degrees.  She is young and I believe that she is benefitting from attending in-person classes because she went to a public charter school which was mostly homeschooling for high school.  Also, the fee waiver we have qualified for has made her attending CC an affordable option.

I know that she can transfer 80 units from a CC to TESU.  Can she take the Institutes 2 credit ethics class, 3 CLEPS, another 1 unit free Sophia class, 24 units in Study.com UL/UD business classes, and then finish up with the 1 unit cornerstone and 3 unit capstone at TESU to earn her degree?

As long as you know what program you're aiming for ahead of time (sounds like you're aiming for the TESU BS in Business Administration/General Management) so you can pick the right CC courses to fill the gaps, it should work. There is always the possibility that the CC courses might not transfer the way you expect though.

For the TESU BSBA degree, you'll need

• 60 credits in Gen Ed (which will include the A&I Lit and Ethics course, plus cornerstone),
  
• 36 credits in professional business courses (which include the Intro to Management, Intro to Marketing and Capstone),
  
• 18 credits in your area of study with 12cr in UL courses (broken down by which concentration you take), and
  
• 6 credits are electives that can be anything you like as long as its college credit.
  

It sounds like you already have a good idea of what you are planning to do, but I'm sure someone here, like dfrecore, can help you finalize a proper plan... just keep in mind that the TESU catalog changes every year so the plan requirements can and do change.

BSBA requires College Algebra (or Quantitative Business Analysis) in addition to Statistics. I don't believe that Finite Math will work here, it will likely end up as a GenEd elective for folks not in the BA CS program.

I believe so, it can also fit into Human Cultures/Humanities. Alternate options include the Study.com Info Lit course (very easy) and the Intro to Religions DSST (or Study.com course).

Money Management will likely come in as Personal Finance and will be a free elective unless it is specifically corporate money management, which could fall under finance.

I did a quick degree plan for you.
1) Finite Math does not count towards the Quant Lit requirement for the BSBA at TESU, she needs College Algebra or higher
2) Sociology/Anthropology for Diversity Requirement still needed
3) Money Management won't count for Finance requirement
4) Needs 4 UL and 1 LL course covering 3 of the 4 areas (the BSBA only requires 12cr of UL in the AOS, so 4 courses)
I show a total of 7 courses (28cr) remaining after she completes everything you listed as taken/taking at the CC.  She will lose a few credits, but not too much so I wouldn't worry about it. (Guidance, PE & Money Management are overages for the Free Electives area).

Thank you very much for your responses, I knew I would receive some expert advice.  She is doing well at our local CC and we are only paying for books and $23 in fees and a $20 parking permit per semester.  It is not as inexpensive as some of you have been able to complete your degrees, but it is working for her without too much expense for us.  It is just the upper level credit on which we do not want to have to spend a fortune.

I would have her take College Algebra at some point, as well as Sociology/Anthropology.  If they have Principles of Finance, that would be good too.  As much as she can take at CC for practically free is a good plan.  She is also allowed 1 additional course in the AOS that's LL, if she can find a good one.  Throw some options out there, I'll let you know what would work.

I always say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so if she's doing well at CC, then keep on doing that.  I doubt you could do alternative means much cheaper, plus at her age, she has plenty of time, so there's no rush for the BSBA.

Books are $400+ per semester, so I believe we could do alternative credit cheaper.  However, the line "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" certainly applies.  I believe that attending classes is good for her and with the California Board of Governors fee waiver (no $46 per unit), we are happy that she is doing well and will just keep her there.  She is actually afraid to transfer to a 4-year school, even if she can live at home.  (She has an anxiety disorder and the CC is small - about 4000 students - by California standards).

She has also taken Math C (4 units) which is intermediate algebra.  Will this transfer to TESU?  If her keyboarding and document formatting (3), applied accounting (4), and her intermediate algebra (4) will all transfer to TESU, we might look at having her do one of the BALS in either Healthcare Management or Human Resources.  That is 11 units which I did not think would transfer.  They will be on her transcript, but have a course number above 50 or a letter © which do not transfer to 4-year schools in California.

In the LS 30 units, 18 have to be in one concentration.  Do the other 12units of the 30 have to be other liberal studies courses from outside the concentration area?

Her career goal is actually to work an office in a rest home.  She is very specific that that is what she wants to do.  Her "real" career goal is to write children's books, but she knows that she must get an education for a day job.  The English major today is very different than the one I did back in the 1980s.  There are whole areas of literary criticism which did not exist when I earned my BA in English.  I do not think the focus on criticism (which is politically motivated) is going to help her with what her writing goals are.

Her intention is to study writing - in ways that will work for her - after she has a BA and is working in an office job.

So, I added the courses, and also added the BALS, and it changes exactly nothing.  You still have the exact same number of courses to complete, both UL and LL, they're just shifted around a little bit.

If she does not want to take the College Algebra course, that is really the only reason I would switch to the BALS - she is very close to completing the BSBA, and I think it's a better option both for HCM and HRM.  She can pass College Algebra if she has passed Intermediate Algebra and Stats, so have her take that.  Seriously, stats is way harder.

The other thing, in my opinion, about getting a BSBA vs BALS is the flexibility with the UL courses in the BSBA.  The BALS has very specific courses she would have to take to get the certificate/concentration; the BSBA is much more flexible (has 3 HRM courses that have to be taken, then 3 additional ones of her choice; the HCM has 6 electives).  She would lose her Applied Accounting course, but I think she can use the Leadership course in the BSBA/HRM concentration.  She can also opt for 2 BSBA concentrations (so HRM and HCM) if she wants.

Really, I would encourage her to continue with the BSBA.

Thank you for your swift response.  We can have her continue with the transfer AA in Business for next school year (she only has to take one math class - statistics - to earn the degree).  At the end of this semester, she will have earned an AA in General business and a 30 unit general business certificate from her CC.  However, she will only have 54 transfer units (with regards to in-state 4-year colleges).  Is the reason you recommend the BSBA for employment reasons (later in life)?  I will speak with her about her options.  However, due to the fact that her desire to write children's books does not translate into a college major, she does not seem to have much opinion about which major she should choose for a BA/BS.  I told her that the BSBA is a "safe" major for getting a job and she said, "OK, I'll do that then."  However, I will let her know what her options are for the BALS too now that I have received some info. here from the experts on TESU.
