Hi, I am very new here and had a question about the DSST Foundation of Education exam. Is it a paper format or is it online like CLEP? I have taken one CLEP (and passed) and was wondering if it is the same format, multiple choice online or if it is different? I am taking the American Literature Clep next week and hoping to take the Foundations of Education very soon. Thanks!

It is electronic, although I think some military people still have paper tests. If your testing center has CLEP on the computer they should have DSST on the computer too. It is multiple choice, and unlike CLEP's five answer choices has only four (meaning that it is statistically easier).
I think you'll like the DSST format better, I find it to be more updated and it doesn't have the introduction pages of "how to use a mouse" and "how to scroll".
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

DSST test format is mostly through computer, although if you are in an active combat zone paper exams may still be available, Active US servicemembers will be able to clarify on that.
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

Another cool thing about DSSTs is that they show the excerpts of all the questions when you click "review"

Hi!
All of my DSST tests have had 4 answer choices, unlike some of the CLEP tests which have 5. (Correct?) "DSST is also statistically easier since their answer choices are A-D, not A-E like CLEP." (Source: CLEP and DANTES Test Questions: What is the difference between CLEP and DSST?) I know, it gets confusing!!!
Yes, the format of the DSST tests is so much better! I prefer their testing format over the CLEP's.
For future DSST tests, here is a link to the DSST site for $5 practice tests. (Not all of the exams have practice tests.) Test Preparation |*DSST | Get College Credit These are great because they are in the format of the real thing.
Hope your studies go well!

I do not believe the paper/pencil DSST exams are limited to only military bases. Your best bet is to ask the center where you plan to test. Is the center where you have taken the CLEP exams listed as a location that delivers the DSST exams? Just because a test center delivers one program does not automatically mean they also deliver the other one.
One of the nice benefits with DSST's internet-based program is your ability to "log in" to view your testing account. You create a username and password at your first visit (different from one you may have created to take a DSST practice exam), complete a registration page (you will need to know your school's 4-digit DSST code to enter here if you want them to receive an official score report) and make the credit card payment -- all online. You will always have the option to log back in to this testing site to review your scores (also can print a receipt of the test fee paid at the time of delivery), provide feedback to the DSST program, etc.
CLEP will be changing over to an internet-based form of testing this fall and I am picturing that their online format will be similar to DSST's. Candidates supposedly will be able to pay their test fees ahead of time and select their score recipient (typing in a mailing address if their school is not on the provided list). I do not know if the actual format of the test will change. Time will only tell...

The testing center I used actually isn't even offering CLEP right now, something with a computer issue with only the CLEP exams. They do offer the DSST exam, I have looked online at their website to see the next closest facility, I called that center and no one had any idea what I was talking about. I left messages at two other centers that are 1 hour and the other 1.5 hours away from me. According to the website, the rest are 3+ hours away from my house.
Being able to pay ahead for CLEP will be a great change, is that something I can do for the DSST exam? I didn't realize that option. Thanks for your help!

Updated in this case sounds much better, thanks! I am confused I had read elsewhere the DSST exam has 4 and the CLEP I took had five options I believe. Thanks so much!
