Ok all, I need to pick the wise sage brains...
My DD#1 took 2 highschool dual enrollment classes last year for 3 credits of history and 3 credits of literature. The awarding University only awards credit to Juniors and Seniors. She was a Sophmore. I had her keep all her papers, course description, syllabi, book list, etc. How would you go about getting credit for these courses NOW? I contacted Learning counts. She has no life experience, otherwise she met all other criteria., but they said she would not qualify. Any other ideas?

If my child were in this situation, I would try to find a CLEP or DSST that covered similar material and have them take the exams. This way the child gets credit where credit is due without having to jump through a bunch of hoops.

Thanks Upton Sinclair, she could take the Western Civ 1 CLEP, but honestly what she really needs is the upper level Literature credit for Ancient Literature/Greece and Rome. What about a PLA?

There are some people on the forum who have used PLA to get credit, I would echo uptonsinclairs advice since any credit is better than none, unless of course she has completed all the CLEPs and DSST she will need for her future general education and the Trojan effort involved in a PLA is good use of her time resources for the resulting credit. Can you be sure she will be granted the exact credit she needs from a PLA? How about Humanities CLEP since she'll have ancient literature along with the back stories already the other stuff may not be as difficult to build on.
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

Yes, she's working on her CLEP list. I was just hoping she could somehow get that upper level English credit since we could substantiate it. That's why I was thinking PLA. But good point EI2HCB -- do I know if the PLA would actually get her the upper level credit she desired???

Yes, exactly, she needed to take the two dual enrollment classes her Sophmore year of high school, but the awarding University has a policy of awarding credit only to Juniors and Seniors. Just school policy. All classes this year and next are getting dual credit awarded, so not all is lost. We are quite happy with the arrangement thus far. I just thought there might be a way to get those credits through another program since we have all the documentation.

Hometeacher, sorry your DD is going through this after working so hard while still in high school!
Of course, your preference and first choice is to exhaust all your resources trying to get the credit from the university that offered the classes. Testing is a possibility if there is a test for that particular subject. As you mentioned, Learning Counts is another option if Option #1 doesn't work out. But it sounds like you got some bad/incorrect advice there. Did someone at Learning Counts tell you that life experience is a requirement for successful completion of a portfolio? Did you ask them if a high school student can complete a portfolio? Sometimes we get incorrect information when we present an unfamiliar scenario (still in high school, dual enrollment, etc.). Do you mind sharing what scenario you presented when you contacted Learning Counts? Was it a credit specialist who told you DD didn't "qualify"?
To receive credit, portfolios must document college-level learning. To do this, students have to choose a college-level course at a regionally accredited college (easy for you, assuming the university where she completed the class is regionally accredited) and match their learning with the outcomes of the course. Another easy one because she successfully completed the class already and has already met the portfolio will consist of some information about the class, a learning narrative, and documentation. The learning narrative should walk the assessor through the learning and reference the documentation. The documentation, in this case, would be papers & exams your daughter completed that show her learning process and mastery of the material. Completing the course while in high school shows initiative and interest, all of which would make her portfolio more interesting.

Hometeacher, if the classes your daughter took are upper level then successful completion of a portfolio showing that she met the learning objectives of those courses will result in upper level credit. Learning Counts portfolios require students to locate an undergraduate class at a regionally accredited college and match their learning to the learning outcomes in the course's syllabus.
