Let me answer your three questions this way - Yes, Yes, and Yes.
Yes - I believe that wikipedia and sparknotes COMBINED with InstantCert may be just the trick.
Yes - I had difficulty, the most I have had on any one exam. I took the exam yesterday (4/17) but firmly believe that I passed and will confirm this when the results arrive in around 2 weeks.
Yes - I did they are: Faces of a Nation (The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union, 1917-1991) by Theodore H. Von Laue, The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Empire by Raymond Pearson, and Soviet Politics 1917-1991 by Mary McAuley. I bought them all USED (very cheap) from Amazon.
Finally and other Yes in the form of a VIDEO - "The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union" also USED from Amazon.

Trajan Wrote:Hi Shotojuku,
I plan on taking this exam in 3 weeks. Currently I have the red rudman book for it, but thats it. What books and resources did you use and were they sufficient for the exam?
Trajan,
I got the Rudman book and I absolutely hated it. I had serious issues with the answers Rudman said were correct.
OK - I'm sure they are correct, maybe
most correct of the choices, but I really felt like I had to research the answer to be sure of it and I simply just did not have enough time to do that.
In the end, I shelved Rudmans and used Instacert and Wikipedia. Wikipedia was right on the mark and filled in Instacert quite nicely.

Best of luck,

I had a similar experience with the Rudman's books on both the Civil War and USSR. I aced the Civil War exam and am patiently waiting for my USSR grade. The real benefit that these books offer is a chance to see how DANTES Q&A appear on the actual test as oppossed to the CLEP format. Until someone puts out a more reliable book or study guide the Rudmans book are the only ones out there for DANTES except of course the power of the almighty INSTANTCERT flashcards which to me are the REAL SOURCE of information. Good Luck All!!
