My biggest gripe with research schools is that they put a lot of pressure on their professors to do research and publish. If I ever become a professor, I am only teaching at a teaching-focused school. Research is important and has helped advance civilization, but we don't need most PhDs in the country doing it all the time. That's when we get into useless research. Even some of the research done in the hard sciences has little to no applicability.
