College Rings
#1
As part of my job I get involved with lost and found. About a year ago a class ring was turned in and I thought me boss had run down the owner, he didn't. Today I had to go through some other items and I came upon this ring again, I decided to see if I could find the owner.

Its a pretty impressive ring, looks to be gold, has a dark blue stone, "University of Florida" around the bezel, "BSBA" on one side, "61" on the other....best part is two alligators rising up on both sides as if they are swallowing the words on the shields....a pretty cool ring. The tails to one side are worn away ....this thing has been worn! On the inside are three initials, the first was hard to read but looked like a "K". I was about to call the alumni office at UF and try to track down the student, but decided to compare the three initials against the board of directors...sure enough, there he was.

Guy was pretty happy to get it back and he had actually forgotten about the initials on the inside, he detailed how hard he had been looking for it and was really excited to have it back...I guess 50+ years is plenty of time to grow attached to something.

Makes my rethink my position on College Rings, Maybe I should commemorate my BS with a signet and the letters IC superimposed over COSC. LOL

WOW! First off kudos for your diligence and tenacity! Secondly, I think if you get a class ring, you should be sure it's real because the fakies cost way too much lol. I think back in 90 when I graduated from Culinary, they wanted like $900 for a cubic zirconia! Forget that!

Congrats on reuniting the ring with its owner! I can imagine he thought it was lost forever. I wonder why your boss didn't try to locate the owner? Kudos for going above and beyond. I agree with Cook that class rings so outrageous now. My son didn't even want one when graduated from high school after he saw the cost. I do think men tend to wear their class rings more often and longer than do women, so I think for a man the investment is more worthwhile.

We got one for my daughter when she finished High School/her AA degree. Went through The Ring Company Class Rings, Sports Rings, Corporate rings & Custom Rings These were the only folks that would give her the customization she wanted with what I thought was a very fair price.

No one else would put the letters PTK (for Phi Theta Kappa honor society) on the ring, they all wanted a big fee for set up, Ring Company didn't. They also accommodated the Bible verse she chose. The company was great to work with.

We wound up with a sterling silver ring for about $280.00 I thought it was a great price. The gold just wasn't an option, she did have the SS "antiqued" I believe...its sort of silver with blackened accents. Looks more or less like this: http://www.ringcompany.com/Style.aspx?So...=Conqueror

Awesome! Nice memento!

What did you get? I'm like anti-jewelry as a rule (except watches) but I really dig class rings.

When I got one, back in '89, they were cheaper. One ring supplier had the contract for this (Canadian) school. They came to the school and showed a bunch of styles. The one I liked, I chose because it wasn't big and clunky. No stone, just the college crest. I'd seen quite similar-style rings on Canadian law-school grads --which I wasn't, of course. I was told by the ring-guys that many female nursing grads chose that style. I'm a guy, but I like it fine.

I paid just over $200 then for a 10K gold one. Strangely, the version in "Lustrium" -their trademarked silver-coloured non-precious metal - was only about $20 cheaper. I've worn it pretty well every day for about 24 years. Except for 6 months when it was lost -- in my own house.
