I have never tested out this way so I'm not sure what to expect. Has anyone taken the Civil War and Reconstruction test and if so is it really difficult. I'm just not sure how this all works and would really appreciate some insight.

This was the first of the four DSSTs I took. Definitely heed Ironhead Jack's recommendation - Free Clep Prep is an invaluable resource! They have the practice tests which you can use to test your knowledge under timed testing.
I recall this is a good test of the Instant Cert flash cards. The material on the cards is close to what you find on the test. So, get good at the cards.
The test covers only a fifteen year period between 1861-76, but it can go into the causes of the war. I recall many questions about Reconstruction laws, including the first Civil Rights Act of 1866, the Freedmen's Bureau and it's work, and a few questions about the Grant Administration.
Don't sweat the test. It goes in depth, but if you have practiced the flashcards, you will do fine. Good luck!

You got some good suggestions already. The only thing I'll add is that this test seemed WAY more straightforward when compared to the other history tests. The history CLEP tests would ask you WHY something happened. This test is more "so-and-so fought at what battle" and "such-and-such a treaty did what". Stuff like that. Very fact based.

SEF stands for Specific Exam Feedback. It contains members feedback on all the tests. It includes things to know and suggested study resources. If you have paid the $20 to access the Instantcert flashcards, then this feedback is included. You can find it on the main page of this forum. It's the 5th section.
