Good Morning-
After I finish my accounting CLEP this week, I will be down to Managerial Comm (Man-373, Guided Study, starts Mar 1st) and 3 or 4 TECEPs which must include Business Policy. I have already passed every CLEP or DSST that fits BSBA at TESC. I'm looking for some feedback on best (not necessarily easiest, but NO accounting, please) or worst of the UL Business TECEPs. With many years in sales/management, that seems like a natural, as does Securities Analysis & Portfolio as I have traded (and taught) stocks and options extensively. I am curious about Operations Management as it is covered in the flashcard section of this site.
I would really like to hear from those who have gone before me- those who have taken the TECEP. I need to finish in May as I am starting my MBA at Marylhurst June 22. They will conditionally admit me to program without actual diploma (have to wait for Sept 1) if I have transcripts/letter from TESC showing I have completed requirements for BSBA.
I am not diametrically opposed to any RA classes available, I just don't want to jump through ANOTHER set of hoops unless there is some great advantage.
Thank you in advance, Greg

You mention that the timing is critical to you, so here's what I'd suggest for selecting your TECEPs and determining the order in which to take them: Review the outline of the available TECEPs, and note which ones are MC-only and which are MC+SA+Essay. The MC-only are computer-scored at TESC, and so can be scored relatively quickly. The MC+SA+Essay seem to be sent offsite by TESC to the remote employee they've contracted to teach the equivalent course and/or score said tests, so can take much longer to be scored and have a certain level of subjectivity on the actual scoring. Hence, you'll probably want to take MC-only over MC+SA+Essay where possible.
Bus Policy and Bus in Society (if you don't already have it) you have to have and they are MC+SA+Essay, so plan to take them sooner rather than later. The remainder you may want to select based on the test format.

GREAT feedback, thank you- I did the review. As I already have Bus in Society(B&M), I will take Sales Management and Securities Analysis/Portfolio Management, with Operations Management as the backup plan, as it has the added bonus of IC flashcards. I am still arm-wrestling TESC over credits for BSAD-398 Finance(Stock/Bond analysis). They say it is the same as Fin-101 (balance-your-checkbook). If the final decision is no, then I will have a 1-credit hole that Op Mgmt will fill.
I will start on Business Policy just as soon as I get my Financial Accounting CLEP done next week, Managerial Communications guided study starts 3/1.
Again, thank you. Greg
UPDATE- after speaking w/ adviser, Op Mgmt won't work for me as I have too many Mgmt credits as it is, so Advertising TECEP gets the nod to fill the 3 (THREE) 1-credit holes I have.

Hi Greg, it sounds like you are working towards a BSBA in "Finance", is that correct?
If so, I think I am going to follow in your footsteps with a couple of these TCEP's (they scare me though).

Hello Mike- No, I'm just getting BSBA Gen Management as Finance looks like I would have to take 2 more ACTUAL classes. I SHOULD have done/still could do Finance, but I am entering the MBA/Sustainability (read "Green") program at Marylhurst Summer Quarter. I applied to TESC last Oct, but held off paying/enrolling until Feb, while testing CLEP/DSST. In retrospect, I wish I had done so earlier as a couple of quirks have come up, nothing major, but nothing ever gets done at TESC quickly. So.....I just decided to test out CLEP/DSST/TECEP- except for Man Comm, of course.
Which way you go really depends on where you start from (not just credits)/where you want to end up, as well as the old time/money factors. Do you have any other accounting than the CLEP you just finished? I have to take Acct CLEP as my 2 earlier B&M classes were 2 credits each. You will need 6 credits to fill this requirement. If I can be of any help, let me know. I will post feedback to exam-specific threads as well.
Thanks, Greg

With many years in sales/management and extensive stock/option trading (& teaching), Sales and Securities should be naturals for me, as well as all three are Multiple Choice/ scored quickest as mentioned above, so would have some time for another TECEP if the unthinkable were to happen.

Thanks for the feedback Greg, your class/test list is very helpful. Which part do you feel that you should have done earlier? Paying tuition or applying earlier? I ask because I wold told by TESC that I should wait for my initial eval before paying the tuition but I MUST finish all tests/classes by 6/30/09 and still have quite a ways to go.
I am 90% leaning towards finance as I believe it will open up a couple more job opportunities than general management (job=immediate objective) after which I will most likely enroll as a part time MBA student at UNCC (probably finance again).
That being said, I have thought about doing general managment just so that I can re-enter the job market as quickly as possible and also use it as a means to an end to enter the MBA program at UNCC.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Hello Mike-
I assume you are looking for a Sept 1 diploma, as you say you must finish classes by 6/30- correct me if I'm wrong. If that is the case, it will be tough, but not impossible to get all the CLASSES/credits you need for Finance finished by then. Registration is now open for April 1-June 29? semester. So you have to register/take/pass any and all ACTUAL CLASSES you need in this - and only this- semester. This type of thing is why I wished I had enrolled earlier as you have greater access to the advising dept.
I can't tell you for sure, but it LOOKS like one would need at least 3 classes (which can be guided study, PLA, on-line, or in person) including Managerial Comm and two Finance classes in addition to all the CLEP/DSST/TECEPs available toward BSBA Finance.
A lot of this depends on what you have amongst the 60 B&M credits you bring to the table, but if you HAVE TO finish by 6/30, I would suggest you look at Gen Management. But check w/ an adviser, which means getting it lined up NOW. I don't think you can even get an full advising appointment for 2-1/2 to 3 weeks AFTER you enroll, although you can call w/ a question or two at any time. If you decide to go Gen Mgmt, check out Farmerboy's path to his BSBA.
Good Luck, let me know if I can help. Greg

Thanks again Greg! You hit everything right on the head. I am going to give them a call tomorrow to find out how quickly I can get an advising appointment because it sounds like I am seriously under the gun. I would essentially need to pay for tuition within the next couple of days to give me a little cushion for registering for 4/1 classes.
My only challenge is that I am currently taking Managerial Accounting, Biology, Statistics, Macroecon and P.E. at my local community college and had only planned on doing 2 cleps per month which will leave me shy about 20 credit hours come 6/1/09 to request graduation on 6/30/09. I am going to need to figure out how I can fit in the extra credit hours or take your suggestion and switch to general management.
I just found out today that a friend of mine is working 3 jobs, from 6am-10pm with 1 day off a week. I gotta find a way to make this work!
Thanks again!

Hello Mike
You must finish all/request graduation by April 1 for June 1 TESC graduation, by July 1 for Sept graduation. Are you moving on to grad school, or is this just a goal you've set for yourself? if you REALLY need to have A DEGREE by then, you may want to check out a Liberal Science degree. In any case, check out FEMA credits. There are many posts explaining how best to use, but if you need any lower level electives, they are cheap (FREE) and fast (OPEN BOOK), and I believe TESC will allow you about 25 FEMA credits. Please verify with your adviser.
Hope this helps. Greg
