Charter Oak Education Waiver
#1
I just completed the waiver process for the oral communication requirement at Charter Oak. My waiver was approved.

Basically, I had to write a letter to the Provost explaining why I believed that I should be granted a waiver. I also included several letters from various sources (friends, supervisors, etc.) to serve as evidence that I have spoken in public. I also included a course description from a sale course I took a long time ago. The sales course required us to make sales presentations to the class. I also included a powerpoint presentation that I had made for another class. In my letter I stated "Based on the content of this application, you should find sufficient evidence to support that I have been trained in oral communication (sales course), that I have the ability to prepare an oral presentation (powerpoint), and that I have used this knowledge and experience in executing a speech or other form public communication (based on eyewitness testimony).

I'm only 6 credits away from graduating!

Nice! It really seems like a relatively straightforward process. I know of three people now who have done this, never heard of a denial.

Well done.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Great job Publius2k4! The way you organized and presented your case, I don't see how you could be denied. I can probably guess the correct answer, but why did you not previously consider a PLA for this subject on your path to a bachelor's? Do TESC and EC have a similar waiver procedure policy? I don't recall see anything about waiver, just appeal for course transfer evaluation.

That was fast! Congratulations!

Johnny - EC does not have a speech requirement, like COSC does as part of their gen eds.

That does bring up the question: Did you get any credits with the waiver option at COSC?

My question about waiver is not about Speech specifically but about any course, or am I missing that the waiver policiy at COSC is only available for Speech?

It is also available for Ethics.
I submitted the syllabi from two previous courses that had ethics as part of the curriculum.

The form also has a box for Information Literacy and "other" and says it cannot be used for English composition or math.
Information Literacy is now included in the cornerstone course, so that one is no longer applicable.

The waiver means you are not required to take the course; it does not grant any credits.

Exactly. You still have to have 120 credits to graduate. It just gives you more room for electives.
