Certificates and Diplomas

The curriculum at the hack schools and udacity are carefully designed to teach what employers want in job candidates. The curriculum is going to be very specific rather than broad. Although good programmers are language agnostic, those hack schools are going to make you use languages that employers want instead of something that only academics use like Lisp. They also design it so that graduates have an excellent chance of getting a job. The hack schools want to preserve their near perfect job placement rates, so the competition for admissions is stiff.

IT certifications including non-tech certs like CISSP and PMP are often helpful for getting past the initial HR filter too for the junior IT folks.

Your MOOC cert, Saylor, extension school cert, and Alison don't belong in the above category of useful certs and diplomas for employment. My work HR couldn't care less, and neither do hiring managers. Certs and diplomas are generally worthless waste of time and money. If you learn enough IT skills in the MOOCs to rock the interview, then great. One guy went through the whole MIT MOOC curriculum for his chosen major. Ultimately rocking the interview is what counts over paper including college degrees. But very few succeed with that approach.

I do not have this one, but someone put one on goggle. Each university is a different logo. The cool fact is 100% FREE and way better than MOOC.

This one from Swinburne University is OK (not mine), but Massey University of NZ looks nicer and more official.

I'm not sure how people feel about the having a balanced work life with education to back it up...
For myself, I'm looking for a more balance portfolio with regards to have a degree and multiple certificates/diplomas.
Essentially, I'm going for my BSBA General Management and getting several industry Business Certs along the way.

Further to that, I will be going for a BSIT and obtaining IT Certifications along the way as well.
Sadly, I should have started that earlier, as I found out recently that IT Certs were paid for from work!
Anyways, it's better late than never going for something I want... I feel more accomplished that way.

I think it would be on the less balanced side to try to complete a BSBA and get IT certs at the same time. My husband, when studying for a cert, takes days of studying non-stop. He has always passed (except the CCIE lab portion many years ago), but it really takes his time and concentration.

If I were you (and of course, I'm not), I think I would concentrate on finishing the BSBA, and then think about switching to a school where your certs will make a difference in the actual schooling (they won't at TESU I don't think) for a BSIT or even just moving on to a masters in what you want to get that in. Since an IT cert won't help with your BSBA, why bother getting it now? Or else, put the BSBA on hold, and go for the IT Certs instead. Kind of just focus on one or the other.

Extension school credits can be useful in certain professions such as teaching, social work, and allied health if the courses say that they are good for CEUs/ PD hours.
For example, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension offers the 120+ hours needed to obtain the Child Development Associate credential for FREE.
Online Child Care Courses: on line child day care courses - CDA
Child Development Associate - CDA
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.
83 hours of ACE-worthy credits
