Careers after TESU Degree
#11
A TESU degree isn't any different than a degree at any other state college - it is what you make of it.

I personally wouldn't recommend that you get a Cybersec degree from TESU - too expensive and will take too long, even with tuition reimbursement (won't help with time). Instead, look at WGU or SNHU or another school entirely. Especially as a 2nd degree seeker.

If you really want a CompSci degree, than TESU is a good option. You can do it entirely via alt-credit, and take the major courses, and then do a final 16cr term to complete the capstone and any other courses you want so that you don't have to pay the residency waiver (which most tuition-reimbursement plans won't pay for).

Through TADA, you can also get both the IT Automation with Python certificate and the IT Support Professional certificate from Google. Unfortunately, the IT Automation certificate will NOT be worth credits at TESU. However, it should be a good free intro into Python scripting. The IT Support Professional certificate is worth some credits at TESU. It is a good intro to a lot of concepts that you'll need if you decide to pursue a Computer Science degree. The networking portion can also be applicable to cybersecurity.

Not free, but Sophia.org also has some intro programming/intro database courses. The courses are a bit time-consuming, especially for beginners. But $100-$200 and 1-2 months of your time would be a relatively low-cost way to find out whether you hate or love these things.

There is also TEEX. Very basic surface-level stuff, but free. Are they actually worth credit? Can you get credit? Will TESU even award credit? Biiiiig question marks there. They've been a bit dubious, credit-wise, for a few years now. But they're free. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Fr..._of_Credit

Great point and good advice. A very attractive reason for choosing TESU is the fact that it is a “public state university “

Thank you for that input! I have a very gracious full tuition reimbursement program from my employer, which has no stipulations in max credits or even degrees.  The only stipulation is that the full tuition reimbursement program is only available at TESU so unfortunately I am only looking at TESU.

The 16cr term (or the new 15cr term starting July 1) is because most tuition reimbursement plans won't pay for the residency waiver - they pay for tuition.  You might want to check and see if they will pay for the waiver, because if they will, then you can do the entire major via alt-credit and then just do the capstone, and your company will pay for the tuition and waiver.  If they won't pay for the waiver, then you would have to pay it out of pocket, and it's $3300 (probably will increase on July 1).

Another possibility for a Comp Sci would be to take a 9-credit semester of literally anything that doesn't overlap with what you already have. Whatever would be easiest. Finish up your credits at Sophia/Study.com. Then take the capstone and another 3-credit course like Software Engineering. It might be a little longer this way, but because you have full tuition reimbursement this would probably be the cheapest and easiest if your work won't pay for the tuition waiver.

I am going to verify with my Employer on the residency waiver - thanks for that.

If speed is not your concern then you could just take a one (or more) courses each term and have the costs covered by your employer tuition plan. You will want to earn 16 credits at TESU to avoid the wavier - which would leave you with about 6 courses total (assuming 3 credit options), one being the Capstone. Since you already have a RA bachelor all your Ged Eds (and Cornerstone) will be waived.  We're usually very focused on quick and lowest cost here, but in your case you have the luxury of time and not having to worry about the tuition costs.

EDIT: Based on this hot off the presses news post, change that 16 credits to 15 - which will require only 4 courses in addition to the Capstone at TESU for you

@aussiegbrl, there are a few from TESU who have gone from even a BALS to a higher position in IT, that's because they've got an AAS with an Info System emphasis and also have experience/working in IT. If you're trying to break into IT, it's great you're working on the trifecta, certs, degree, experience. You don't really 'need' an IT degree to be working in the industry or their sub-fields...

It really depends on the student... I would suggest using your tuition assistance/reimbursement on the required courses for residency instead of paying the residency waiver fee and get a double BSBA CIS/BACS, the major requirements can be met with Coursera, Sophia.org, and Study.com combo you can take CS/CIS courses or e-packs and two capstones to get the 15 required credits.

Since you already have a bachelor, and you have tuition reimbursement (that is limited to TESU) have you consider just moving forward with one of thier master degrees? Sure there are lower cost master programs out there, but again in your situation that is not a factor - https://www.tesu.edu/academics/grad-programs
