I have limited web time available, but I thought this might be of value to you. Taken from the TESC forum. Remember it is free to take FEMA credits to TESC.
Everyone: The following information should be noted regarding FEMA courses.
FEMA courses that have been recommended for credit by ACE (American Council on Education) are applied only to free electives in the respective degree program. If ACE recommends 1, 2, 3 etc. credits for a particular FEMA course, then that is the number of credits that can be applied toward your TESC degree program. Keep in mind that the list that I previously posted and the one that is available by contacting an academic advisor is not an exhaustive list. ACE continuously recommends credit for courses. Before you take a FEMA course, I strongly recommend that you either select from the list of FEMA courses that I originally posted or you check with ACE to make sure that the FEMA course(s) that you want to take has been recommended for credit.
Exception: Those specific FEMA courses that have been recommended for credit by ACE that have been classified as appropriate for the Fire Protection and Emergency Disaster Management specializations. Students in either of these specializations should schedule an appointment with the respective BST or BSHS academic advisor to confirm which specific FEMA courses are appropriate for their particular specialization.
If anyone has a very specific question about this, I would urge you to make an appointment with an advisor

What I used to do is take 2-3 guided study courses per semester. (I would take 3 easier courses or 2 harder courses). Then I would overlap semesters with a CLEP, TECEP, PLA's or Epack course. I did that steadily for about 15 months or so and the credits poured in.
I took 25 FEMA credits (Im an Emergency Management Major) into TESC with me so that helped too.
Good luck with your studies.

Rickyjo,
I felt a need to jump in here....if you've not taken a CLEP/DSST you do not have anything to compare it to. I'm sorry but watching you bang through those economics course (whether you had prior knowledge or not), ALEKS (math programs withstanding) and the accounting material while having hard core computer knowledge I think you are more than qualified to retain an "understanding" of the information needed to pass a standardized CLEP/DSST exam. Just saying⦠J
I for one do not just memorize information; I record the notes onto my VR and listen to it over and over until I understand it. I think those who just memorize (at least on the social science exams) are doing themselves a disservice as the majority of questions are theory and require you understand a concept not regurgitate an answer. Do you know what I mean?
I think you would do quite well. For the social science credits you need you can take intro to sociology (SOC-101-CE) which is a pretty nifty-easy-exam. I have the textbook highlights on cd. Can copy and send as audio files. I also still have my study notes if you would like a copy.
For humanities you could take technical writing (ENG-201-DE). As a computer guy I know you can bang out a test on mostly technical verbiage. Think schematics, computer/furniture set up instructions...its all in a technical format. When I did a brief review of the material (free online source) I said wow this is going to be a fast and easy 3 credits.
The format of a proposal/report is easy to learn its only a few basic steps. TOC, Intro(reference), Body(Procedure), Findings, Conclusion, Recommendation, Index
See the following :
http://www.degreeforum.net/specific-exam-feedback-instantcert-subscribers-only/2181-dsst-technical-writing.html
This was a great example of what my test was like: http://www.degreeforum.net/69570-post36.html
Online resource for the exam:
review: Sentence construction, grammar, punctuation

review the following areas:

Formal Technical Reports
Instructions
Progress Reports
Proposals
Recommendation & Feasibility Reports
...just check out the set up and what looks like what: table of contents, recommendation, index, ...etc...what comes first, second, third...its basically the same format for all...may look different but its pretty much a generalized formula

I think I have nearly all the gen ed I need. It appears that I just need an English composition class, and one social studies or humanities class. English is easy, there's SL, but another social studies or humanities will likely require a class or a CLEP.
......
I would expect that Eng Comp II at SL would fulfill the 3 humanities credits that you need for gen ed.
Another option may be the A&I Lit CLEP, but I don't know if it would duplicate your AP Lit credits.

Lindagerr: I'm a wee bit confused, when did any of the FEMA courses get ACE approval? That's simply fantastic news; however, I suspect all my courses would have been taken before the review dates.
That said, you are not suggesting that I could implement more than the 11 FEMA credits at TESC are you?
Forgive me if I'm coming off as dense, and thank you very much for the post!
BricaBrac: Thanks for the encouragement! I'm very grateful. I have one thing to compare CLEP to, and that is my IT certification tests from a couple years ago. That was a simply horrible experience, I didn't complete it (still have two tests paid for from years ago!), it's the only thing I ever did educationally that I didn't finish.
But maybe you're right, perhaps that was more difficult than this would be. I like concepts, and hate memorization and those tests were all about raw, arbitrary, memorization. Perhaps a less technical test would be easier on me.
If I were to fully utilize CLEP to replace FEMA I would save about $600 if I'm not mistaken. I believe I need about 15 credits from FEMA or another course in this plan. Hey with $600 I could pay over 2 and 1/2 % of my mortgage :-D

Thanks! What was it called?
I just saw a note in the Student Guide to Credit by Exam page 4:
AP English Literature and Composition score 3
AP English Language and Composition score 3
These meet the Written English Requirement.
If you took one of these, would that mean SL Eng Comp I and II would duplicate?

EDIT: NAP's post came on top of mine, read this as if it came before
Right then, so if I'm calculating this properly, I could take the two SL English courses, the two ALEKS courses, and be done with it (maybe). If that's all I need to do, give me two months and I'll have it taken care of!!!!
The only thing in the way now is the high cost of FCC for FEMA.
Can anybody confirm that EC will no longer accept FEMA credit through a TESC credit bank?

Hmmm. It's the AP English literature test. I hope it doesn't duplicate, that would leave me out in the cold as far as straighterline goes. How would I find out? Would they tell me without my applying and spending the $75?
(Exciting! This post graduated me to "knight champion!")

Alissa (alissaroot) took AP English, but I'm not sure which one. This post from 2008 says that A&I Lit CLEP was not duplicate credit.

Well AP English could mean language. Incidentally I've taken that class and have some confidence I could pass the test. I actually passed the AP Lit test before taking the class, lol. It was free at the time, long story.
Maybe I should visit the idea of taking a language test? I think I've still got it; although, it has been a number of years.
