Can I do this from Canada?
#1
Hey guys, I just found out about clep recently and it looks like the perfect solution for me but I'm wondering if I can do everything from within Canada? I'm hoping to get a bachelors in business, marketing would be ideal. I'm really surprised that clep isn't known by more people it seems like such a great option, I have so many friends spending thousands of dollars and hours in university right now.

Anyway I'm hoping that you guys will be able to help me out a bit, I tried searching the forums and from what I've found it seems possible for international students, I just don't really know where to start. Do I just figure out what clep exams the program I want requires and start doing them?

Thanks, Johnny

Yes, you can do it from Canada.
To find a CLEP testing center, go to CLEP Test Center Search to find nearest location and contact information | CLEP
collegeboard.com/clep is a good place to look around.
And for the DSST tests, here's a good site: Free Study Guides and Practice Tests - DantesTestPrep.com
I'm just starting, also, and have 9 credits so far, but I've taken both CLEP and DSST tests at 2 different testing centers.
Good luck!

Hello Johnny! To answer your question....yes, it's possible for international students.

Quote: I'm hoping to get a bachelors in business, marketing would be ideal.

There are several things to consider here....
Do you want to complete your whole degree via online learning and credit-by-exams OR are you seeking to transfer to a brick-and-mortar college later?
What are you looking for in a degree - speed, cost, prestige, etc?
Most students here enroll in one of the Big 3 colleges, namely Thomas Edison State College, Excelsior College, or Charter Oak State College, as they are currently the most accommodating in terms of transfer credits.
Another thing to consider would be... have you earned any college credits? If yes, you might want to check how they transfer to your target college.

Once you've figured out which college you're going with, get a copy of their credit breakdown for a business degree in marketing. (i.e. TESC's BSBA in Marketing BSBA in Marketing Degree Program)
Next, plan the courses/exams you wish to take and align them to the degree plan. You may utilize CLEPs, DSSTs, UExcels, StraighterLine, Saylor, ALEKS, TEEX, NFA, etc. depending on which college you are enrolling in.
Once you've worked that out, post a copy of the degree plan here and get feedback from other members.
As you move along, keep asking questions. You'll get a hold of how this whole thingy works before you know it. Smile

Hello Johnny, Welcome!

Here is a link to my post on the BSBA Marketing degree. It lists exams to use for the Marketing Area of Study as well as alternate courses. Also lists TECEP recommendations so you can take advantage of the low cost pay per credit tuition plan.

See my signature for links to information on the PPC plan, a cost spreadsheet and my BSBA General Management degree plan which you could use as a guide for the general education section.

Good luck!! I'm sure you will benefit from taking the non-traditional path to earning a degree; or possibly two, after you've realized the cost savings. Wink

Here is my recommendation for a TESC BSBA Marketing degree plan. Note, it is not the cheapest route (Saylor courses cheaper) but I think it's a good, solid plan as it takes advantage of the following: exams listed in the specific exam feedback section of IC, course/subject overlap, and it meets TESCs 24CR residency requirement. I've included more than enough TECEPs and 1 course recommendation if a GPA is desired.

OVERLAP: [ENG201, ENG216, COM300] - [COS101, CIS107] - [PHI287, PHI384, BUS302] - [MAT102/103, MAT105, MAT115, MAT121, MAT129] - [MAR301, COM210, MAR321, MAR323, MAR351, MAR411; MAN301, MAR322].

For faster results, I would take the MAT102/103 CLEP & MAT105 TECEP after completing the Aleks courses. You wouldn't even need to study, both exams are general math.

Hope this helps!

Only negative might be the very limited number of CLEP and/or DSST test centers in all of Canada. If you are not far from the US border, I would suggest also checking the test centers located in the closest state.

I did my degree while splitting my time between the US, Canada, Hong Kong and China... but I took all but 4 of my exams in the US. Basically, if life takes you to the US often, or if you live close enough to the border that you can drive down for tests, it will make life much easier. There's very few CLEP/DSST testing locations outside the US, and finding one that offers both is even more difficult. Otherwise, you can find the cheapest flight to an American city you can find, book a few nights at a hotel and just bang out as many as you can in 3-4 days. I did this in NY/NJ for my "finish line sprint", and it was a very busy, but rewarding 4 days.
