CS50 on EdX issues ACE credits?!
#1
I was looking through the ACE National Guide when I found that Harvard's popular Introduction to Computer Science, CS50X, is apparently accredited at 4 LD credits. This is apparently different from the CS50 credits that are issued directly through Harvard College/Extension School/Summer School.

I couldn't find how exactly to get these credits, however. It seems like no one on the internet has really talked about this. I looked up CS50 and EdX on Credly, but couldn't find any badges.

Interesting, there are a few classes available for credit from edx and I believe they're freebies too! (At least with some type of membership, and with some time on your hands, you can get all the credits you need to get started...) I need to get hooked up to with them, I wonder if the freebie access I have include these...

The only information I can find about this is not about getting the ACE recommendation but getting credit through Charter Oak:

Quote:About Charter Oak State College Credit-Eligible Courses:

We're partnering with Charter Oak State College, Connecticut's public online college, to provide students with a unique opportunity to be awarded transferrable credit for work completed in selected edX courses. This partnership will give students from all backgrounds an affordable and flexible way to earn college credit, track their accomplishments and work toward a degree. Students who enroll in the Verified Certificate track and pass the course with an 65% or higher are eligible to receive Charter Oak State College credit. **
Credit details:
Number of credit hours for this course: 3 credit hours
_
Cost: $300 USD ($100 USD/Credit Hour) - pay for credit earned after passing the course with a 65%or better.
Eligibility:**_
  • Learner must enroll in the Verified Certificate option to be eligible for credit upon completion of the course.
  • Learner must abide to all course and academic integrity policies throughout the entire course.
  • Learner must receive a passing grade of a 65%or better in the course
ACE has approved several EdX courses or recomendation (see https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a33232a) but it doesn't look like EdX has created a way to actually record those in Credly.

They must have decided it didn't benefit them financially to grant ACE credits, which I think is shortsighted. I think they'd get much higher enrollment for these certificates if people could get ACE credits just by completing them, rather than having to pay hundreds extra to get a college to transcript them.

But hey, maybe that's part of why 2U is going bankrupt.

Hmm... I just checked my Edx subscription, I don't have access to these as freebies... Oh well, the option to get 90% scholarship is still good for 5 classes/year, thus if you take these, you can get them for very cheap, and have 10 classes done. The one that hits me is the UCSD MicroMasters worth 6 graduate credits! 8 classes, and using the method above, it'll cost very cheap! Here are the offerings: https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a33232a

The problem is you can't actually get Ace credit for any of these because edx doesn't seem to offer a way to transcript them.
Cs50 is the only one that charter oak will transcript.

I wonder if there's a hidden way to get EdX to issue them...

Quote:Some educational institutions or organizations may offer you credit based on edX verified certificates. Students receive verified certificates after they earn a passing grade in a course that offers these certificates. If you're currently associated with a college or organization, contact that organization directly to find out about credit options for verified certificates.

So it looks like there may or may not be some obscure 'credit options for verified certificates' at unspecified educational institutions.

Might be worth asking TESU about this, if anyone is in touch with them.
It looks like they're working closely with edX and doing all the credit stuff for the MicroBachelors courses. Maybe they can transcribe the ACE recommended certs too.
Quote:All MicroBachelors programs are reviewed and awarded credit through our credit partner institution, Thomas Edison State University (TESU). TESU may not be the institution providing the course content for your given program, but they are a leading innovative university to provide a hassle-free process without fees. Some MicroBachelors programs may have the option of earning credit through the institution providing the course content as well. See details on the individual program page for details.

The list of EdX programs don't list CS50, although they do list NYU CS Fundamentals and a few other courses. If you're part of the Verizon program you may want to check those out. Apparently TESU will transcript these for free.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't understand the reference to the Verizon program.

Also, my understanding was all the micro bachelor's programs cost at least $100 per credit to be put on a transcript. What am I missing?

You're not missing anything, the Verizon option doesn't have these classes available for free... I tried both my accounts, one with Verizon and the one I used for EdX MicroMasters for TESU. There are no freebies that can be done for credit on the Verizon one when I tried a few months ago, I haven't tried now...
