Hi all,
Based on feedback here, I decided to write to the state accountancy board here in California for clarification regarding using PLA credits. This is because some of their info indicated that they will only accept up to four credits that are "internships/independent studies in accounting and/or business-related subjects." I was worried that PLA might count as independent study.
So I wrote to them this morning. Here is what I said:

Quote:I am an older university student majoring in accounting. I have a question about something I saw on your organization's info sheet called:
Educational Requirements for CPA Licensure Beginning January 1, 2015
Baccalaureate Degree & 150 Semester Units
In the green section called "20 Semester Units--Accounting Study" it says:
"Maximum 4 semester units in internships/independent studies in accounting and/or business-related subjects."
My university offers the ability to earn credit through something called a Prior Learning Assessment. This is an evaluation process for students who have worked in a particular field for a long time. Students select courses where they have strong reason to believe they already possess the knowledge in that course. So students gather various kinds of evidence and submit this to the university in a very organized and structured fashion. The university then determines if the student has that level of knowledge or not. If so, then credit is awarded for that course.
My question is this: I have worked in the accounting field for about 18 years and would like to earn credits in this manner but am concerned about them being able to apply to the requirements listed above. Is Prior Learning Assessment considered Independent Study?
Thanks for your help.

Quote:In response to your email, we are not familiar with this type of program and normally an internship involves working at a company. However, if for this program you describe in your email, your college gives you semester or quarter units, printed on an official transcript(s) and labeled as an internship or independent study course, we more than likely will accept this. Please keep in mind that I cannot 100 percent guarantee that this will be accepted, without viewing the actual official transcript.

BSBA/Accounting TESU (2016). MSA UIUC (2018).
Need help with portfolios? I earned 18 credits at TESU through portfolio evaluations. Nine of those were for upper level accounting courses. My advice for PLA/portfolios: TESU portfolio tips The first post has the Portfolio Checklist I created. Page ten has the actual narrative I wrote to receive credit for ACC-440.
Using Straighterline's Financial Accounting as a substitute for TESU's Intermediate Accounting I? Don't do it if you are an accounting major and/or want your CPA license. They are not the same course and I think TESU has erred in accepting the SL course as Intermediate I. I made this discovery here: Intermediate Accounting II.
