Great thread, Burbuja0512!

Where can I find the grades that COSC awards for various scores on non-refreshed DSST exams?

Thanks for your help!

Great question about the DSST scoring. I have no idea... I scoured their website and all I can find are FAQ's that confirm the fact that non-refreshed DSST's do get a letter score, but I don't see a chart anywhere.

All I can tell you is what I've gotten so far. According to my transcript, here are the scores and grades I have -
Bus Law II - scored 61 = A
Technical Writing - scored 62 = A
Intro Law Enforcement - scored 63 = A
Environment & Humanity - scored 64 = A
Org Behavior - scored 65 = A
Money & Banking - scored 50 = C banghead

I know this doesn't help a lot, but hopefully gives an idea. Make sure you look at COSC's master list of exams here: http://www.charteroak.edu/Current/Academ...r-list.pdf This shows which tests they accept and what their minimum score is. It also shows whether they give UL or LL credit for it. Typically they follow the recommendations that Dantes has, but there are a few exceptions.

I agree. After reading the TESC & COSC catalogs, it seems LDAS and Individualized Studies are basically the same thing. Why can't all RA schools of higher education use the same nomenclatures? banghead

Can the capstone and cornerstone classes be completed on your own schedule, at your own pace, and at the same time or within the same semester? Also can you start the classes whenever you like or is the beginning date scheduled? I am leaning heavily towards enrolling with Charter Oak but one of my primary reasons for going for one of the big 3 is scheduling flexibility and I would hate to be tied down for part of the year.

Does anyone know if Charter Oak requires the essay portion of the DSST Technical writing exam?

@CMOS... unfortunately there is no self-paced option for any classes that I know of at COSC. I didn't have to take the cornerstone as I enrolled before it was required (but I did get in on the higher tuition rate lol.) The Capstone has about three weeks of eight being oriented around team assignments, not to mention that most of the individual assignments require forum participation. So, you post your essay and then comment on your peer's essay. Overall, I really liked the forum part of it as it was interesting to hear others' perspectives and engage in an intelligent conversation about topics that I normally wouldn't talk about. I took the 8 week Capstone, but I think that they might offer a 15 week option too. I'm not sure. I would have not chosen a 15 week class if there was a shorter one available Wink

@jbraz45 - no they do not do the essay format. I scored a 61 and did not do the essay. COSC awarded the letter grade of A as they score the non-refreshed DSST's. Good boost to the GPA and overall a test that I felt was not very tough.

FYI everyone - I am traveling over the next few days and should get some very occassional internet access (I really hope), but I will be back online at 100% capacity so I apologize in advance if I delay in case another COSC question comes up. Smile

Hi, Burbuja0512. Could you help by answering a few (!) questions? My goal is to get a degree like yours from COSC, and I’d love to benefit from your experience. Colleges don’t help you w/ what tests to take, what you’ll get credit for, etc. until you register, right? How soon before graduation did you enroll w/ COSC? Do you think that that was enough time to get everything done so that you could graduate in June? (Congrats on that, BTW.) Does COSC care in what order you took classes/tests/Aleks/etc.? (Will COSC refuse credit on one thing ‘cause you’ve taken something else before it?) How would you have done it differently? (Different tests? Different arrangement of tests? Apply earlier?) Since my foreign language skills are non-existent, what tests would you recommend that I take instead? How did your pre-CLEP credits play into your course plan? (Were they business courses, or gen. ed., or “free” credits?) Lots of questions, I know. As soon as I hit “Send,” I’ll think of a dozen more, I’m sure. :willynilly:

@LaterBloomer - Yes, you probably won't get much help figuring things out until you actually enroll. The good news about COSC is that their website is pretty straightforward.

The first step is to figure out what general requirements you need. If you have existing credits, COSC will probably accept them, and you can likely guess where they'll be applied, but of course, you won't know for sure until you do your evaluation. To see what the categories of general requirements are, go here: General Education Requirements at Charter Oak State College Now, to figure out which tests will help you meet these requirements, go here: http://www.charteroak.edu/Current/Academ...r-list.pdf This will help you with the first part of planning, but your concentration plan of study, or CPS, is a whole 'nother story! Not to worry though - we can help you here, and you'll get a lot of help with that at COSC.

Regarding the order of the tests - I never figured that out. I asked my advisor about it and she said that I had to take tests in their correct and logical order. I don't really know what that means and never had an issue with it. I guess if you've got calculus credits, you can't go back and take college math? That's just a guess. I actually took Intro to Business as one of my very last tests and got credit for it even though I'd pretty much already completed my entire concentration, so I have no clue..

Also, I enrolled before I actually had any testing credits. It's a long story, but I didn't know what the heck I was doing, had no idea that I could test first and then enroll. For me, however, having paid the tuition was a huge motivator. I felt like I "had" to keep going. I really was terrified about the whole CLEP thing at first.

I liked the order that I did my tests in, so I wouldn't change that. I started off with the tests that interested me the most and then got to the more difficult ones at the end. I needed a certain amount of time to get used to testing and by starting off with the most interesting ones, it helped me understand my learning style, which made studying for the ones at the end much more efficient.

.. I hope this helps! I am happy to answer other questions if you have them!

@Excelsior954 - You know if you go to COSC, that you'll have to change your name. ha ha ha - you'll need to be CharterOak954 or COSC954 :p
