test center question
#1
Greetings fellow testers,

I do apologize if this question has been answered and I have overlooked it, and, I figured you guys might be more helpful to me versus google which at times can be as helpful as a dead cat (sorry for the bad analogy). So I am looking to enroll and begin testing for a degree with Thomas Edison starting next month.I did some research and easily found testing for the DSST/DANTES. I would like to start with my CLEP tests first however, and this is where my question comes in, I went to the CLEP center site and entered my city and it came back with nothing but I did a search with my zip code and got a huge list of DSST centers so do these centers also offer the CLEP tests or are they different test centers?

Thank you for taking the time out to look at this for me I will provide more information if you need it

Hi...CLEPs and DSSTs are not necessarily given at the same location - some administer CLEPs, some DSSTs, some (if you're lucky) both. Since it sounds like you're having trouble locating a CLEP testing center - try directly looking up all the Community Colleges, Colleges, and Universities in your area - if they have a test center it will be listed somewhere on their website.

Next step, call and ask if they proctor CLEPs - be sure to get confirmation that the test center is open to non-enrolled students. (I'd also do this with your chosen DSST test center. I found out the hard way that many DSST test centers listed on the DSST website are either no longer proctoring exams or are only open to registered students).

I had your same problem in reverse - my CLEP test center was located 2 miles from my home, UExcel's - 3 miles from my home, but no DSST test centers ANYWHERE in my area. Two years after giving up on DSSTs completely, I gave in and decided to test at my closest location - a major university town 45+ miles away.

Good luck in your search. Don't give up - there is always a way!:hurray:

If you used your zipcode on CLEP's website, then yes, you are finding testing centers that provide CLEP tests. A testing center can be Prometric (DSST), College Board (CLEP), and/or Pearson Vue (UExcel).

The correct site is: https://clep.collegeboard.org/search/test-centers

In my area most sites that provide DSST provide CLEP, and there are significantly more CLEP providers than DSST providers.

It also it can change annually. My first year of testing my CLEP center was 9 miles away - DSST an hour a way. The second year of testing I had a DSST testing site about 20 miles a way, but the nearest CLEP was 75 miles away in horrible traffic.

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

The CLEP site is pretty good about keeping their listing current in regards to authorized test centers. Some do drop out and I noticed quite a change when CLEP made their transition to the newer testing system. Once the cut-off date for transition hit, those centers who had not transitioned (and trained) were removed.

Any site that is authorized by CLEP to deliver their exams will be on that list. If you have typed in your zip code, make sure to adjust the distance from that zip code you are willing to look. You may have to travel further than expected. If you do come across several, I would suggest calling each to find out their particulate -- hours, limit to number of exams in one day, fees, etc.
