Reverse-Transfer Programs Reward Students and Colleges Alike

Reverse-Transfer Programs Reward Students and Colleges Alike - The Chronicle of Higher Education

This is becoming popular as students leave community college (with 1-year of credits) and go to 4-year colleges.

If YOU have done a YEAR at a JC or Community College and moved on see if they have a REVERSE TRANSFER policy. You could have an UNCLAIMED AS degree and do not know it.
Non-Traditional Undergraduate College Credits (634 SH): *FTCC Noncourse Credits (156 SH) *DSST (78 SH) *CPL (64 SH) *JST Military/ACE (48 SH) *CBA (44 SH) *CLEP (42 SH) *FEMA IS (40 SH) *FEMA EM (38 SH) *ECE/UExcel (30 SH) *PLA Portfolio (28 SH) *EMI/ACE (19 SH) *TEEX/ACE (16 SH) *CWE (11 SH) *NFA/ACE (10 SH) *Kaplan/ACE (3 SH) *CPC (2 SH) *AICP/ACE (2 SH) *Sophia/ACE (2 SH) and *FRTI-UM/ACE (1 SH).
Non-Traditional Graduate College Credits (14 SH): AMU (6 SH); NFHS (5 SH); and JSU (3 SH).

we have reverse transfer in NC. I can't think of any reason a student shouldn't do it (assuming they are actually already at the university), but I still think it's so much better from a budget-perspective for the student to complete the AA if their state has guaranteed transfer (ours does) and articulates into the 4-year universities seamlessly.

All you folks who have FEMA IS 12 SH + that you paid for can do this at FCC.

Yes, the FEMA Credit Conversion is considered FCC Resident Credits.

CA CC's also have guaranteed transfer agreements with different CSU and UC schools (and private schools), but at my local CC, you only need 39cr to get that transfer to CSU & UC schools. Even if you did more classes specifically to transfer in as many credits as possible, you still might not get an AA/AS. There are about 3 courses that our local CC requires for you to get the AA/AS that the 4-yr colleges do not require, so many students opt not to get those, and head on over to the 4-yr college to get going on their BA/BS instead. For the UC schools, Speech is NOT required, so I am positive MANY students choose not to do that one, which would mean that no matter what, even if they get their BA/BS at a UC school, they could not get their AA/AS! Oh yeah, and Fitness is another one required by the CC, but not by CSU or UC. I'm sure that one holds people back as well. US History I/II is another one where the CC requires it but the UC schools don't, and I'm not sure where people stand on that one.

I too would strongly encourage my kids to finish up at the CC before heading off to the 4-yr college, but I don't think I'm the norm in terms of practicality and thriftiness!

Speech was definitely required when I got my AA from a california community college, but fitness was not.

I just looked up the current requirememnts of where I went and they still don't require fitness, and they also don't require speech any longer. I'm sure that's a big relief to many folks in community colleges, but I didn't mind speech too much.

Obviously different CC's will have different requirements, but my main point was that getting an AA is not necessarily the same as getting the required credits for the Transfer Agreement. Until all of the CC's make those the same, they won't reap the benefits of these reverse-transfers (the benefits being a much larger percentage of students graduating with their AA's). You would think this would be really important to them...

I wasn't saying it to disprove you, I know there will be variation, even among the same state. I was mainly just musing because I was happy not to take a fitness class, but got sidetracked when I saw speech was no longer required there and it was a bit surprising. Seems EVERY where requires speech

I looked into reverse transfer years ago at the Alamo Community Colleges. I'm multiple courses away from finishing an associate's degree. But, with a bachelor's, I no longer had any use for an associates in a similar field. CCs are offering these programs to increase their graduation rates. If people are getting the transfer credits they need, then CCs shouldn't worry about graduation rates.
