Quick question. I have taken a few of the CLEP/DSST exams on base. Are military service members able to take exams off base?
For instance at the local college or open test centers listed on the official CLEP/DSST sites?

Short answer: yes.
The exams themselves should be free, but the college or test center will or might charge you a registration fee of $25 or so. My local University back home would do that.

The base where I am stationed only offer the exams twice per month:
* Every 2ND and last Thursday at 0800, 1000, 1200.
These times are of course during working hours. A local college down the street is an "open test center" that offers the exams on the weekend from 0800 - 1400.
Thanks for the information. The $25 dollars isn't to bad if I want to get ahead of the ballgame and have the ability to take a test on the weekend.

You may want to check out your test center on base in person. My test center on NAS North Island had a written rule that you had to make an appointment in advance and you could only test on certain days. When I got there it was FAR more relaxed, like a walk-in basis. They asked me if I wanted to take any more tests while I was there.

Also, call the local college testing center to check out their fee. That is not controlled by either CLEP or DSST and there have been past posts on the subject of costs and travel time, etc.
My center only costs $15. If my memory is correct, someone posted awhile back that their center wanted $50 or more.
It's worth the call just so you know their requirements. My center won't take cash and previously you could pay with a check but no credit card. Due to so many dead beats in South Florida, they had to change their requirment to a money order. That means you have to plan ahead to get that, too.

Good deal. I am going to contact the college office and the open test center. Both are not open right now due to the holidays.
Thanks for all the help!
