Bachelors in Sociology Options?
#1
Hello, everyone! First time post, but have been lurking and learning a lot here in the past few weeks. I'm hoping to get some advice...

I've been looking at options to finally complete a bachelor's degree. I have an AA degree that I completed at a CC. No UL courses completed yet.

I was thinking about WGU BSBM and have been admitted. I really like the price and their unique approach to online education. For those reasons, I think I've been trying to convince myself that it's a great idea. But, if I'm honest...I really don't want a degree in business. I've taken business courses in the past, got A's in them, but they were definitely not my favorites :ack:. I actually work at a community college (can take LL courses here for free, if I need to) and plan to continue working here for the foreseeable future. So, I don't need a bachelor's in any specific field, but it'd be nice to check that box! I figure, I should at least major in something that I have an interest in-- sociology, humanities, etc. With the BSBM, I'm worried that I will hate the content, have difficulty forcing myself to learn it, and might eventually lose motivation to complete the program.

There are a decent number of schools that offer online Sociology programs, but they are usually quite costly. Are there some affordable options for a Sociology or Social Science type degree? I would even consider something like the BALS offered by TESU...if I could find enough UL course options of interest to meet the requirement, without having to do them through TESU and pay their tuition rates.

Non-TL;DR version: I'm looking for affordable bachelor's degree options in the field of social science.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

You can do the entire BALS at TESU for $7300 start to finish, if you don't have any transfer courses. If you do have some, then you can do it for even less.

You won't find something similar in price to a one-term WGU degree, but you can still do Sociology for cheap through TESU.

Here are options for fulfilling the Sociology Area of Study requirements: JSD's BA in Sociology (after July 1st, 2015) | Degree Forum Wiki | Fandom powered by Wikia

(combine them with one of the general education maps and add in whatever free electives you like to complete the degree)

TESU's BALS would be even easier to complete as well, there are lots of options for that. I considered doing Siocology (my AA was soc) but had slightly more Psych courses by the time I transferred to TESU so the psych degree made more sense. BUt Soc is the much more interesting field, imo.

Also, if you're interested in an Psych degree, Patten has those. They are competency-based as well.

CSU Pueblo Independent Study has lots of upper level classes in Sociology and the Social Sciences for $525 per 3 hour class. They also offer a Sociology degree and a Social Sciences degree.

Thanks for this, Dfrecore. I didn't realize you can take even all the UL courses through ACE methods as well. That's fantastic! Thanks!

I'm currently getting the Liberal Studies degree with social science concentration. Most of my UL courses are in Psychology through study.com under the Guardian scholarship (so I didn't have to pay for it!!!). I considered going for a psychology degree but it would have taken longer - an additional 5 or 6 classes from what I already had and a couple of them a little more expensive than what I wanted to spend in the short time frame I was trying to complete my degree (12 weeks). So, its definitely an option. I spent just over 3k including the $1800 residency fee, the $332 for the graduation fee and the $1098 for the capstone. If you go that route you might only need those UL courses and the rest you might be able to get from your CC. There is a limit to the number of CC credits they will take so you'll need to supplement a little from other ACE providers.

I am planning to get my bachelors in Sociology as well (for pretty similar reasons as you). I have spent a few weeks searching for UL Sociology courses.

Personally, I've settled on pursing a BA in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice through CSU-Pueblo IS. Though I have not formally enrolled yet (building up my transcript), I appreciate their straightforward pricing ($525/3 credit course) and term flexibility. I honestly could not see myself enjoying the learning process through TESU's UL courses.

If I needed a degree for job placement/advancement, I'd personally choose TESU, but since I am very interested in the subject matter and learning more, I prefer (and will pay a small bit more) to go through a single program (instead of using multiple sites/sources for UL). But also, I am located in Colorado, so I'm slightly biased Smile

I'll be posting more once I get started at CSU-Pueblo (after I grab a few more ACE credits) since there doesn't seem to be too much here about them.

Good luck!!

I can see this. If I was going to be getting a degree purely for enjoyment and learning, I would want some butt-in-seat courses with good professors. Great professors can bring the material to life.

I want to clarify this: TESU counts some things as UL that maybe aren't at other schools. They are way more lenient about that. Don't think that because TESU brings them in with UL course equivalencies means that another school will as well - COSC and EC won't if it's not ACE-recommended as UL as far as I can tell.
