Just wanted to give a report on BYU's Independent Study Public Speaking Course. My daughter just completed the course.
1. The price is reasonable at $148 credit hour ($444/course). Granted not Clovis or CLEP Exam material, but still very reasonable. No textbook, all materials in the online material.
2. QUICK turnaround of assignments. If you upload your speeches, the instructor has feedback in 2 -3 business days.
3. There are 9 lessons. No homework for the 1st 2 lessons. The other 7 lessons are different speech assignments.
4. You can complete the course quickly - my daughter completed the course in 10 days.
5. Once the grade is posted by the instructor, you can request a transcript the next day. If you are a BYU student and graduating from BYU, there are some deadlines to be aware of.
We thought of having our daughter go the DSST - Principles of Public Speaking route, but we were concerned with the "crapshoot" of a random topic for a 3 - 5 minute speech, along with the several week wait for the grading of the speech from Prometric.
If you need a speech course, I would highly recommend the BYU Independent Study course.

Thanks for the review - very helpful.
I have a son I'm trying to talk into this one. Have you seen the transcript? Does it say independent study on it? His community college is just a bear at accepting courses and I think those words might throw them for a loop. thanks

I haven't see the transcript yet. We'll order one next week (my daughter is out of town).

Thanks for the review, Shawn! I'm currently taking this class and it's very straightforward! The three 10 minute speeches (Informative, Persuasive & Argumentative) caught me off guard, but that's not a problem. As noted, the feedback has a 2-3 business day turn around. The faculty seem very helpful and are making this experience fun. I chose this course over the DSST because the stress of waiting for results is too much to bare! (Thank you English Comp w/ Essay CLEP! :roflol: ) Cheers, this one gets another solid vote! Also, serves as a viable option for people seeking to complete their CCAF Degrees!!

Finished this course in 8 Days. The results should hit the college within the next week or two. Also, as the OP noted, you can record your speech on your computer and upload it to the BYU site. It's amazing! True, it's a little more work than the DANTES, but the quick feedback, awesome instructor and fast grading (relatively no wait time) make this course superior to the DANTES. I'm so happy that I tried it out! :hurray:

Congrats! We'll see how long it takes for a transcript. We received grades in the mail on Thursday. On Tuesday we mailed the request for a transcript. According to BYU - it takes 3 - 5 business days to process a transcript request.

Received the transcript in the mail today - no mention of correspondence or web study anywhere on the transcript.

,...and the experience was great! The instructor was patient and responsive, reasonable price, all by correspondence - I would recommend to all who need that "oral comm." req. for grad., because it was the best deal for a distance speech course I found anywhere.
