BACS in TESU , then later BSBA Healthcare Management
#1
Question
Hi everyone,  appreciate the advise given through my other thread.

I've been reading through most of the forum posts in the past 10 days or so, and this board has been extremely informative.

having said that, few of the information is a bit outdated or conflicted, and it's unclear what is still applicable right now

My plan is to get 2 degrees from TESU , first a BACS, then start a BSBA in health management. it will be difficult to mix and match courses in-between the degrees, because of the existing transfer credit mentioned below, hence, I'll just probably focus on finishing the BACS asap.

I'm looking to pay the residency waiver, as time management is a huge issue. I don't think I can dedicate 12 weeks and do 16 credits. However, I'm not ruling it off completely.

Existing credit:

High School - IGCSE - Advanced Levels
  • Biology AL -->  D
  • Chemistry AS --> D
  • Information Technology  AS --> D
sadly, they are all Ds, but fortunately, it seems they can be transferred  to General Education.

Upeople(Nationally Accredited - hence, not useful?)
  • intro to programming, Python
  • Programming 1 , Java
  • Programming 2 , Java
  • Globalization
  • Intro to Psychology
  • Biology

not sure if this is useful in any way, and I don't mind repeating the programming courses in ACE alternative.  Biology is also covered in high school. any "brief" PLA potential here?

Masters in Public Health - UK
  • Topics in Public Health - 20 credits
  • Health Promotion - 20 credits
  • Health Needs assessment - 20 credits
  • Epidemiology - 20 credits
  • Advanced Practice in Public health -20 credits (General course, can apply to any major)
  • Research Methods - 20 credits (General course, can apply to any major)
the grades are roughly all in Bs, so they should be accepted.  Although each course is considered 20 credits in the UK, I think that will only translate to 5-6 credits in the US.  So, most or all of these courses must be transferred.

Potential PLA:
  • Emergency Planning Course (I work in Public Health emergency management, with good experience)
  • Health information system ( I developed multiple advanced solutions for Public Health emergency management and general health information systems )
Not sure if this will be worth the hassle. Moreover, I'm expecting this to land in electives, hence it may compete with Masters credit.

Few questions:

Q1. seems TESU does accept up to 30 "graduate" credit hours.  Must they all land in electives? Do they need to correspond to existing courses within the TESU catalogue? (sorry if the question is stupid Big Grin ).

Q2.  Is the course list in SDG , up to date? found here :  https://study.com/college/school/thomas-...rsity.html
for example, does TESU accept SDG Computer Arch?

Q3.  Where can I find alternative credit for Software Engineering UL?

Q4.  I know it's a BA degree, but can I have more scientific courses  from Section D in the General Education, instead of section A, B and C.. B and C are a bit dull Sad

As to the Degree Plan,  I guess best case scenario for BACS is:

General Education (45 credits)
  • Biology (from Highschool)
  • Chemistry (from Highschool)
  • CIS 107- computer concepts and applications (maybe from Highschool. or just Sophia/tecep)
  • Cornerstone  (TESU)
  • the rest from ACE alternatives (Sophia, SDC, etc)
Electives (30 credits)
  • From masters
  • maybe some from PLA
  • PLA course - 1 credit
BA CS AOS (45 credits , adapted from here):
  • Intro to Programming
  • Data Structures - from (SDC)  does it transfer?
  • Calculus 1
  • Discrete Math
  • Operating Systems
  • Computer Architecture (UL) 1 -  from (SDC)   does it transfer?

  • CS Elective LL - Introduction to IT
  • CS Elective LL - Computer Science 102: Fundamentals of Information Technology
  • CS Elective LL - Programing with Python
  • CS Elective LL - Programming with R / intro to stats
  • CS Elective (UL) 2 - Business 303: Management Information Systems (SDC)   does it transfer?
  • CS Elective (UL) 3 - Computer Science 302: Systems Analysis & Design (SDC)  does it transfer?
  • CS Elective (UL) 4 - Computer Science 303: Database Management (SDC)  does it transfer?
  • CS Elective (UL) 5 -  CIS-351 Software Engineering .  where can I find it ?
  • CS Elective (UL) 6 - Capstone - (TESU)

For the BSBA healthcare management, that can wait. I will then need to take 10-16 extra courses. I'll probably pay double graduation fees, but hopefully only pay for the residency waiver once for both degrees.

looking forward for your advise

You already have a master's degree? Why are you looking to complete 2 bachelor's degrees if you already have a master's degree? Seems kind of backwards to go for those bachelor's degrees

If you already have a Masters in Public Health, then it seems pointless to worry about getting a concentration in Health for BSBA.  BSBA CIS should be good enough. Also, you could skip the BSBA and go for, say, a WGU MBA.

All the CS Study.com courses should still transfer. You can also ask TESU academic advising to confirm classes will transfer before you take them once you enroll.

CIS-351 Software Engineering is a course you could take at TESU as part of flat-rate tuition. Otherwise, you could do a TECEP Network exam. Other options are here: (Part G)

https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...ience_Plan

You have section D, then in your AOS section C requires additional Scientific Knowledge or math. Then you have 30 free electives where you can take whatever you want. And in addition, you can take all the classes you want regardless of what the degree requires, and it will go on your transcript. In the end, employers only see the transcript, not your original degree plan.

I'm not sure how your credits will transfer,  so maybe others can comment on that.
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.

It's a bit ridiculous i know, but I'm required to have a BS and Masters for a future job. sadly.
Since I "have" to to get the BACS, I might as well get the BSBA HM in my free time, as it's only few additional courses worth.  BSBA CIS also another option.
BSBA HM is useful, as it's a mini substitute for the MBA , in health care, since i already have another Masters.

FYI, if you plan to complete 2 degrees at TESU, I would suggest going for the BACS first but not graduating. Then complete the BSBA. Then graduate. If you graduate in between them, you would be required to complete 30 NEW credits toward the BSBA. This could be annoying and take longer.

For Software Engineering, there are two possible solutions, both of them currently untested. Saylor has an UL Software Engineering course and there is a SAS certificate that has been recommended for 3 UL credits in Software Engineering. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Coursera We do NOT know if TESU accepts either one as being the same as CIS-351 or even if they accept them as UL.

For gen ed credits, you MUST fill parts A, B, & C with relevant courses. You cannot fill them with courses from part D. Check https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...ts_Roadmap to see your options. You can fill the electives with whatever you want, but it'll be easiest/fastest if you fill the electives with courses for your 2nd degree.

It looks like you're in the UK? If you're still there, you might want to see how far you are from a CLEP testing center. IIRC, there are 2 in the UK that are open to the public: one near London, one near Manchester. That could be an easy way to quickly test out of parts A, B, & C that aren't covered by quick Sophia courses. I think a couple of international students have reported success in getting & using ModernStates vouchers for CLEP exams, despite not being in the US.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I didn't see your reply. thanks alot

Bachelors is a requirement sadly, no matter what, and must be in Computer Science/IT/Data-analysis.  I see your point on BABS CIS vs HM, that will depend on the amount of time/effort after the BACS. seeing that my BACS might be filled with other transfer electives, it will be harder to get either :Smile. but i think a second bachelors, especially bachelors of science, is worth 10-16 extra courses, if they mostly can be taken on SDC. .  Unfortunately, some managers may frown upon BA degrees in my work sector and region :/ Health related subjects are also easier for me, and more relevant

Unfortunately I cant join WGU, as  I'm an international student.   I think I will get 1-2 Bachelors, then take few months break, focus on work, then perhaps prepare for PHD.

I don't think I'll pass that TECEP, maybe i'll take the tesu course, or check one of the options mentioned by rachel.

Time is of an essence unfortunately, I need to graduate from BACS as soon as possible. If the degree plan mentioned above is correct, then i would need to register for 30-45 extra credits regardless, for the 2nd degree.  Indeed it will be annoying, but the second degree is just a potential bonus Smile

thanks for the Software Engineering options!

sadly I'm not in the US/UK. no CLEPS options for me Smile. not a big issue, as I'd rather have a quick course on Sophia/SDC i feel.

I forgot to mention above, I do speak Arabic. can I remotely test for that somewhere ? how many credits is that worth?

thanks a lot guys!

You can do the ACTFL exam. It's worth 12 credits.

1. Why does it need to be in one of those subject areas?
2. Plenty of schools only offer a BACS and not a BSCS, so I wouldn't get hung up on that.
3. In what area would you pursue a PhD?
Ongoing: MLIS

June 2022, Thomas Edison State University (TESU): Second degree - BA in Computer Science + ASNSM in Mathematics + Cert. in CIS + Cert. in Operations Mgmt.
e-Packs: Computer Concepts; Industrial Psych.
Guided Study: Comp. Architecture
Online: Intro. to PLA; Database Mgmt.; Software Eng.; Data Structures; Liberal Arts Capstone; DSI-610 (Statistics.com)

May 2019, a residential, RA institution: BA in Political Science and Educational Studies
Relevant equivalencies: MAT-321; MAT-431; STA-315

thanks!  seems that it will be part of the 90 ace credits.

I'm assuming this can be a the "C. Knowledge of Human Cultures" section within General Education? or does it have to be an elective?

1- my current job involves developing applications in the health sector,  the MPH covers the health aspect, so I need a BA/BS to cover the technology part. So CS, IT, Software engineering, Data analysis, etc. I think BACS is the fastest and most relevant option.

2- yup, and BA is infact quiet helpful seeing that i need to finish quickly, and my math skills are not the best Big Grin, but at my job, they would not easily understand how a BA can be scientific(Computer Science that is)

3- PHD will be within the scope of the following areas: Public Health,  Emergency Management(for public health events),  Digital Health, Software engineering.  My biggest successful project was developing a public health emergency management system, to be used in developing countries/settings. Piloting it in several Mideastern and African countries. . So most of my experience is within that realm.

NA credits from UPeople - not accepted at TESU

Q1 - the graduate credits will come in where they come in - and yours look to be free electives, unfortunately.

Q2 - course list is up-to-date, yes they take that course

Q3 - Study.com has Software Engineering, but it's LL.  That means that you need to find one more UL course to bring in.  If you can't pass the Network Technology TECEP exam, then you're kind of screwed.  You need 18cr of UL, Study.com has 4, the capstone is 1, that leaves 1 UL.  FHSU is MUCH cheaper than OSU (not sure why anyone would do that instead) - but the problem you may have is that most schools aren't going to let you just come in and take a single UL CompSci course.  They'll have all kinds of pre-reqs that you won't be able to meet (you won't have them as graded credit and these schools don't take ACE).  So your best bet is to pay full price at TESU ($1600), or else do the 16cr term.

Q4 - Gen Ed has those specific requirements, no getting around them.  You can bring in more science courses, but they will go in as electives for the major (6cr) and then free electives. CIS-107 won't fit in the GE if Chem & Bio go there, so it would go to the AoS electives instead.

Yes, the courses listed will transfer.

TESU will make you pay a 2nd residency waiver for the 2nd degree - so it's not at all worth that price in my opinion.  First degree there would be $6498 for 6cr + RW, 2nd degree will be $4893 for 3cr + RW.  For the price, I think you're much better off doing the Business degree at UMPI if you bother doing it at all.
TESU BSBA/HR 2018 - WVNCC BOG AAS 2017 - GGU Cert in Mgmt 2000
