BA - Communications
#1
I need 12 credits to complete my communications electives, but I didn't see anything listed for CLEP or DSST. Does anyone have any ideas how I can do this w/o taking courses? I'm a student @ Thomas Edison and their communication courses are somewhat limiting. I would have taken a TECEP exam, but the school pulled these exams. Any advise?

Thanks

Dantes' exam offerings include a couple of communications courses:

Principles of Public Speaking
Technical Writing

Ohio University also offers credit-by-exam. Their tuition is comparable to Excelsior and Thomas Edison's credit-by-exams.

Some courses-by-exam that may interest you:

JOUR 311 History of American Journalism (3 quarter hours, upper-level)
JOUR 411 Communication Law (4 quarter hours, upper-level)

Ohio U Journalism Courses

OTEC 130 Business Communication I (4 quarter hours, lower-level)

I know you said no courses, but LSU Independent Study is self-paced, and the classes there are a bargain at about $250 each. They currently have two communication courses available: LSU Independent Study Course List
CMST 2010 – Interpersonal Communication
CMST 2063 – Argumentation and Debate

BYU Independent study is also self-paced, and they have six communication courses available at about $423 each:
BYU Independent Study
TMA 150 — Public Speaking
COMMS 101 — Mass Communication and Society
COMMS 235 — Introduction to Public Relations
COMMS 300 — Media Ethics, Law, and Responsibility
COMMS 480 — Media Ethics and Moral Reasoning
M COM 320 — Communication in Organizational Settings

If you are determined to take an exam, the International Association of Administrative Professionals offers three upper level credits in Communications if you can pass their CAP exam: ACE 2003

I didn't look into that very far, so I can't tell you when, where, or how much the exam is, but it does exist. It's the only exam I could find that hasn't already been mentioned. Smile

Good luck!

You might try looking into some of the TECEP exams still offered such as Marketing Communications. Generally TESC accepts that into the communications program even through it is technically a marketing credit.

Just wanted to bump this thread for any Comm majors on the forum....

I have a friend who is considering a BA in Communications from Thomas Edison, and needs ideas on how to quickly knock out her Communications Electives (preferably by credit-by-exam as much as possible). Here are some viable options I've gathered so far:

Exams:
Public Speaking - DSST
Technical Writing - DSST
Public Relations - TECEP
Marketing Communications - TECEP
Intro to News Reporting - TECEP
Business Communications - Ohio U
History of American Journalism - Ohio U
Communication Law - Ohio U

Any other ideas for credit-by-exam? Here is the credit distribution template for BA Communications - TESC: Thomas Edison State College | BA in Communications Credit Distribution

You mention "4 quarter hours"--are there different "qualities" of hours? E.g., are "quarter hours" and "semester hours" inherently different?

1 quarter hour = .67 semester hour.

Chief pros and cons:

Semesters: pro -- more time for in-depth study; con, can't think of one, maybe that it makes summer term kind of intense.
Quarters: pro -- more variety of study, classes feel easier because they are shorter; con: more money for books, 180 feels like more than 120.

Point is moot for exam credit...
