BA, BABA, BLS - Accounting, which one?
#21
As someone who has worked in accounting, a BABA w/Accounting minor is fine - a BA in Accounting is better, but not enough to be a deal-breaker. I would only say it's an important distinction if you wanted a CPA, since the BA in Accounting has more Accounting courses, including more UL accounting which is usually required.

Since you're at 18 courses to take at UMPI, I might consider doing a month at SDC to take COM 120: Presentation Skills in the Workplace, ACC 201: Intermediate Accounting I, ACC 202: Intermediate Accounting II, and ACC 301: Applied Managerial Accounting. But that's mostly for speed - if you can get it down to 12 courses, I feel like you have a better chance at finishing UMPI in 2 terms. But if you don't care, or you have enough FAFSA money to pay for UMPI for 3-4 terms, then I guess it doesn't matter much.

Cost is a pretty important class, is required for MAcc admissions at a lot of places, and would be valuable if you end up in a lot of industries. I found the spreadsheets class useful and not overly difficult.  Granted, I graduate almost 2 years ago and things have changed.

I really don’t see an advantage to the BABA…unless you want to add a second concentration. You could do the BABA with accounting concentration and a second concentration and it would require fewer courses than the BA Accounting plus BABA.  If you are thinking about the UMPI MAOL as a grad degree, getting the management and leadership concentration would (unless things have changed) save you from having to complete some of the grad-level courses for that master’s. Better to have it paid for with Pell Grant than you paying out of pocket for those courses!

With the move from Strut to Brightspace, the undergrad courses that have counted in the MAOL may no longer count so I wouldn't plan on that unless one gets it in writing from someone at UMPI. I probably wouldn't go for an MAOL if I was an accountant. I'd want an MBA or MS in Accounting. Especially if I was even thinking a little bit about the CPA license.

Louisiana requires 24 business credits and 24 accounting credits (plus 150 overall) to become a CPA. The BABA-Accounting gives 24 accounting credits and 33 business credits, the only thing missing would be a Cost Accounting course which I could take on the way to 150 credits if I wanted to. But again I won't be going for a CPA, and if I did it would be with a company that did tuition reimbursement. For me it's really just which one I can get faster/easier from UMPI, BABA or BA. I think I've decided to do BABA-Accounting since I think it will be faster than a BA-Accounting and I think I like the well-roundedness of the BABA.

Doing the double major would put me at taking 30 classes at UMPI, that's a lot.

Here's the thing, people have been 'busy', probably more busy than you, and they were able to do a double major with UMPI... You're looking at the numbers and it does seem daunting at first.  You need to compare what you can do and what you want to achieve, as I mentioned above, with your commitments and time, you can do the double major before your child hits the third grade.

For reference, here's the BA Accounting and the BABA Project Management & Info Systems links.  You'll notice almost half the courses are available through Coursera, Sophia.org, Study.com and so on.  You want to hit the trifecta of certs, degree, experience, and you should start with doing Coursera, Sophia.org, Study.com, from one and then work towards another provider.

BABA Project Management: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan

One other thing to compare to is other institutions and how lengthy a course can/may be, here's a comparison for one course at institutions we recommend, a capstone course has been compared to 3/4ths of a degree at the CBE options such as WGU or UMPI.  3/4ths is 30 courses out of 40!  If that is the case, people can complete that in 3 months/12 weeks, or two 8 week terms.

My recent post #1: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid397786
Post #2: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid395900

In conclusion, don't let the numbers scare you, it's the amount of work you need to do.  You can think of one major as a course split into numerous assignments, assessments, each major actually is similar to completing a cumulative capstone.  For the length of time it will take you to do two courses at a regular college, you would have done two majors! Amazing right?

Last but not least, you're transferring the max into both degree majors, you're only left with 13-15 courses, if you do 5/session, it'll take 3 sessions as I estimated and will be just $4500.  Start with the Coursera, Sophia.org, Study.com, that will hit both majors, once done then do the UMPI courses last.  Pace yourself with all providers, report back on your progress...

I also appreciate the well-roundedness of BABA.

The UMPI BABA lacks Intro to Marketing and Principles of Management so I would consider taking those courses as part of your electives or in addition.

Is this right?

This is correct, I despised 466. But it really was the only class I didn't enjoy.
