Athabasca U - BGS (Guinea Pigs Wanted)
#1
So you have an RA associates degree, or some foreign credits, and looking to ladder that up to the Bachelors level as a 'check the box' for future education, employment, or other personal reasons such as immigration. Athabasca U has a 3 year BGS (General Studies) that will take RA/foreign credits (evaluated by NACES members USA, ACES members Canada). Total costs: $129 Application fee + $127 Evaluation fee (plus transcripts/foreign evaluation)

English writing skills requirement
Students must meet the following English writing skills requirement:

hold credit in ENGL 255 (Students are strongly encouraged to register in ENGL 255 early in their program.);
or have a grade of B- (70 per cent) or better in an Athabasca University English course above the preparatory (100) level;
or receive credit for an English course in which a grade of B- or better was achieved.

Minimum credits required
Credits in the area of designation 45
Senior (300 or 400) level credits in the area of designation 30
Total senior-level credits (including above 30) 45

Humanities area of study* 6
Social Science area of study 6
Science area of study 6
*The 100-level ENGL courses will not satisfy the Humanities area of study requirement in this program.
These courses may, however, count as part of the total number of credits required for the degree.

Maximum credits allowed
At the preparatory (100) level 6
At the junior (200) level in any one discipline 15

Arts and Science designation
To satisfy the 90-credit requirement to complete the BGS degree, students must complete 45 credits in courses with an Arts (Humanities and/or Social Science) or Science designation (30 of these credits must be taken at the senior (300 or 400) level). Refer to Minimum Credits Required above.

Applied Studies designation
The Applied Studies designation includes courses in Business and Administrative Studies. Transfer courses in engineering, education, physical education, etc. are also applicable to the Applied Studies designation.

To satisfy the 90-credit requirement to complete the BGS degree, students must complete 45 credits in courses with an Applied Studies designation (30 of these credits must be taken at the senior (300 or 400) level). Refer to Minimum Credits Required above.

Students in the Applied Studies designation in the Bachelor of General Studies degree must also complete ADMN 233 or ENGL 255. ADMN 233 will partially satisfy the Applied Studies area of study requirement in this program.

Which are the maximum number of transfer credits accepted. I cannot find it.

That's because there are no residency requirements, it's the only 100% transfer degree available that is Regionally Accredited. I just sent a post in the ENEB Master Thread to see if one of the members can be the first Guinea Pig... All foreign transfers and the 60 RA under grad credits that the person has, should complete the requirements completely... https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid397696

"Athabasca University does not accept transfer credit from this institution (Sophia Learning)"
No ACE credits accepted?

Tuition is $609 for non-canadians plus books/fees so they estimate each class to be $2k+ in addition to application and transfer fees. The good news is for the 2 general studies degrees there is NO resistancy requirement.

I think you can have found gold on this one.
I understand then that they do not accept ace credits?
All credits RA?
or there is something I'm not seeing it right now.

Yes but 2k per class.... and all the credits must be RA can make it difficult.

Any option on how to get the English class cheap?

Looks they would probably let you PLA up to 21 credits for the applied studies degree but if all other courses have to be RA, that puts a significant limit....

Does anyone know how the "area of study" works? Would it be listed on your diploma similar to a major? Can you pick anything(within reason) or does it have to be something they offer? Could be a good opportunity for those cheap/free metropolia classes if they let you pursue something IT/CS related...

This is interesting. My partner just graduated with his Associate of Applied Science in Digital Media Production specializing in Graphic and Web Design. He currently has 101 credit hours. I might get him to do an ENEB degree where he could essentially earn a Master Titulo Propio and a Bachelor of General Studies from Athabasca U at the same time.

Yes, Basically... That's right, you don't really need to have an Associates though, as long as you have enough RA to get the general education requirements listed above. You can then use any foreign credits such as ENEB with a NACES member evaluation of your choice to get the remaining credits for the Bachelors General Studies.

For those starting off without credits, I would not recommend the Athabasca BGS as you need RA/foreign credits for this degree, they do not accept CLEP, DSST, ACE, NCCRS; Having said that, they do accept AP, IB, Dual Enrollment, etc though. This will work for those who have 'some' RA credits, even the minimum required for general education.

For those who have the 21+ RA credits in English, Humanities, Social Science, Sciences, and you have plenty of Applied Studies from ENEB offerings or Arts/Sciences from XAMK/Metropolia, you can transfer in the bulk of the credits into your degree. The main thing is (and the kicker is), the Applied Studies or the Arts/Sciences both have total requirements of 45 UL credits, 30 UL in either Arts/Sciences or Applied Studies depending on which you select.

It's really a very interesting offering, but the requirements are somewhat harder to get unless you have the required UL, ENEB offerings are perfect for the UL Applied Studies, for XAMK/Metropolia, we don't know if the bulk will come in as UL or not... We won't know until someone tries and reports back, it's different than what we're used to...

Nice if you can transfer all credits toward that degree since no residency requirement
but all my credits are from prior degrees and "If you have an existing undergraduate degree, your previous courses can be considered for credit toward up to 50% of your AU degree requirements."
So what if I have two or more degrees, do they count for 100%~ LOL
