Just got back a response email from an advisor at TESC. Here's what she shared...
"CIS-301 Management Information Systems is classified as an upper level Natural Science course. CMP-354 may not be used as a Natural Science course."
After reading in these forums it seems like the majority on here said that CMP-354 could be used as a Nat. Sci. course. Now I'm not sure what to make of this. Did this advisor possibly make a mistake or is this course really not able to be used as a Nat. Sci. course? It's the last one I need to use for rounding out my current degree plan in Natural Sciences and Math.

E-mail your questions to the registrar.

I have emailed them Ironheadjack. Was just looking for feedback from someone who may have gotten this course transcribed recently....

In the op you said you got an email from an adviser. It is always best to ask questions to the registrar because they are the best informed and have the final word on decisions.

I was really just looking for some helpful feedback from others who may have had experience with this course while I waited on a reply from the registrar since that can take a few days...

I'm at excelsior and I have no idea what their policy is towards computer courses but I'm shocked TESC considers "Management Information Systems" a natural science course
how in the world is Management Information Systems NATURAL ?
Oceanography ? yes
Biology ? yes
Meteorology ? yes
Chemistry and the Environment ? yes
Management Information Systems ? really ? a natural science ?
I rate myself a 10 with MS Access, a 7 with MS Excel and I know a fair amount of R and C programming
but I just don't see how ANY computer course could be considered natural science

With some exceptions likely being present, these are the course areas that fall into Nat Sci by default (based on the TESC advising handbook that was available when I attended):
Subject Area Prefix
Astronomy AST
Biology BIO
Chemistry CHE
Computer Science COS
Earth Science EAS
Environmental Science ENS
Geology GEO
Mathematics MAT
Natural and Physical Sciences NAS
Physics PHY
Statistics STA
Looking at this link (
General Education Courses) you can see a different list but find that CMP courses are still not listed under the natural sciences area. CMP courses just don't really fit in TESC's model for general education as they are more specific to the technology field. The bottom of your degree plan (
Thomas Edison State College: Natural Sciences/Mathematics) also says this:
"Note: The following areas are considered natural sciences/mathematics and may be used as a subject area in the concentration: biology, computer science, geology, physics, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics."
CMP (computer technology) doesn't fit there by default but if you submit an appeal and explain why it should fit then you might have some luck. The other option is to ask for a reclassification to something that does fit but since that is a TESC course they may not be willing to do that (reclassification works well when bringing in outside credit).
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Some students in the past have had it automatically classified as a natural science, but you never know when they're going to change their mind. I believe someone had to request reclassification before, and the request was granted.

Thanks for explaining that Sanantone. I was wondering because after seeing it on your degree plan, I've asked at least two different phone advisors about it and they both said it would be accepted as a Natural Science course and then this one emailed me back today and said it wasn't so I was a bit confused. Guess I'll have to pick something a bit more certain.
