Any 1-credit, letter-grade courses?

UExcel's are graded, so that's good (or can be bad). I would have a hard time having everything riding on a single exam for a grade.

East Tennessee State University OpenBUCS courses are $300 - but like ASU/EA, you pay after you get your grade. 8-week courses including Intro to Music and US History II.

There's always a 3-credit course at Olivet. Physical Geography would probably be the quickest non-math option. Not only is it short but the required assignments appear, at a glance, to be relatively minimal.

Pre-Credit Assessment


The Path to Credit has two stages. Once you have completed all of the quizzes for this OpenBUCS online course, you may choose to purchase the pre-credit assessment package. This costs $150 and consists of a comprehensive assessment to help you gauge your understanding of the material. This may be purchased as many times as you wish. You do not need to be an ETSU student to purchase the pre-assessment.
The link to purchase the pre-credit assessment will be made available after all quizzes have been taken. Once all quizzes have been taken, look for the “Course Conclusion" module which will appear after module 8. Alternatively, contact Anthony Kiech (kiech@etsu.edu) for more information about purchasing a pre-credit assessment.



Final “For-Credit” Assessment


The final stage in pursuing credit is to register for the for-credit portion of OpenBUCS which will consist of a final assessment by the instructor. This also costs $150 for a total minimum of $300 needed for credit per course. Please keep in mind that registering for credit is similar to registering for a typical ETSU course. The instructors will assess your knowledge of the material and assign a grade accordingly. The best way to make sure you have mastered the material before going for credit is the Pre-Credit Assessment. We recommend that you do not pursue credit unless you score 80% or above.
To pursue the for-credit portion, you must be accepted into the ETSU undergraduate program. The application fee costs $35. However, if you are already an ETSU undergraduate student, you will not need to apply and be accepted. Once you have completed the Pre-Assessment, contact Anthony Kiech (kiech@etsu.edu) if you wish to move forward and we will begin the registration process. Your grade would be reflected on your transcript and GPA at the end of the semester that you are registered in.

I can't make any concrete sense of any of this. There is no clue offered as to exactly what the euphemisms "assess" or "assessment" might stand for. Is there a proctored online exam? Two proctored online exams? A phone call with the instructor? Does the instructor simply review your performance on the quizzes?

If you've been through this process, I'd greatly appreciate any guidance you can offer.

I only have minimal info from a family member, but she did not go through the process. Thought about starting it in Oct 2020 with goal of meeting TN college transfer pathway Gen Ed. But decided to do something else instead to meet personal goals. Person emailed the contact person with some of this to know if proctoring was remote or in person (and how it would be handled given covid issues) Contact person told her "the tests are designed to be taken at home" without proctoring.

Pre Credit Assessment means "practice exam". Did not ask if it was m/c exam, or other. We sure got the impression it was a separate final exam for credit.

Since you are on a tight deadline, I'm not sure that the TN class would meet your needs. It says you get a grade at the END of the semester that you register. I'm not completely sure when the end of the semester as of right now would be but it might not be for a month or two.

Excellent point.  I did email the staffer who is referenced in the course to ask about this specifically.

Yes, BJ, a cursory one.  I  haven't taken anything there.

For what it's worth, my initial assessment is that Olivet seems like every parochial school I've ever been exposed to; much too serious for my taste.

I'm ambivalent about OpenBUCS at this point.  I'm familiar with Blackboard, so I was able to jump right in and start a course (there are only two, US History since 1877, and Intro to Music, which I selected), which itself was fairly good; watch the videos, complete the quizzes (of which there were only eight) and you get unlimited tries.  About my only complaints with the material is that there were a couple of broken YouTube links and for the working links, most of the time markers don't line up.  Those are problematic, because the quizzes expect you to answer questions such as "what time marker indicates the start of a recitative?"

But the big problem is the ambiguity of the "for credit" process.  Once I learn more, I'll update.
