I was just wondering if anyone knows how much overlap there is between the USH1 and the American Govt test? Ive seen some posts saying they have some common material, but Ive also seen the the gov test is a bear. I need a history sequence and since I dont have any special interest or background in either USH or world civ, I was thinking about going for the USH if it would significantly cut down on study time for the govt exam. Thanks!

Well, I'm studying for Am. Gov. right now and I've already taken the US History I test. I'd have to say that there is definitely some overlap between the two. I think going with US History I first would be good. While studying for government I've noticed several things like political parties, slavery issues, women's suffrage, etc. that is a repeat of USH1. And then obviously the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Here's a list that might help you!

Am. Govt. can't be used as a History course. I made that same mistake and took Am. Govt. when I didn't have too. I'm glad I did, but I was bummed that it didn't apply to my History credits. Unless, of course, that has changed in the past twelve months.

I made the same mistake. Government is Poly Sci. However if you have already studied government it will help you in US History I. There is 1/3 overlap I think. I took both and liked the overlap. As you do more testing you will see more and more overlap. Good luck.

I have to take a history sequence (either world civ 1&2 or ush 1&2) anyway, so I was thought if the USH test had a lot of overlap with American Govt Id go for the USH sequence and use the Govt credits as an elective. Not sure though - after reading the feedback on the USH2 and Govt exams Im pretty intimidated. Thanks again for the help. Much appreciated!

Can't hurt to study American Government as part of your prep for US History I. American Government is one of the most often failed exams probably because people think they don't need to study. Thats just my guess. It is very important material. I think it should be a required course for all bachelors degrees in the US.

I would choose USH I & II over all other options.

Underestimating an exam can cost you. If you study up on the two us history cleps you can pass them. What prior knowledge you have will affect how difficult it will be for you to study for these exams. USh2 caught me by surprise by it's difficulty; but my opinion is if you study the IC flashcards hard you should pass. Take USh1 first because it's easier. I've liked history for a long time so I already had the rough time line in my mind; if you don't have a basic understanding of roughly what happened roughly when I recommend just reading through a high-school textbook before digging into the flashcards (and I know ryoder would recommend the rea books).
If you decide to do the WestCiv cleps be prepared to do a lot of studying; they cover such a long time span that you need to cover a lot of territory to try to catch enough of the questions.

Western Civ I&II are very interesting. I don't remember either test being especially excruciating. The specific feedback is very helpful and offers some excellent suggestions for study materials.
