Greetings all.
I did a search to try and find what ALEKS courses TESC accepts but was unable to find a definite answer or up to date information.
I really hate math (REALLLY hate math) and was looking to take the beginning algebra course. Will this work, or does it have to be intermediate? Also, are there any easier alternatives (like I said, I reaaaaaaaaally hate math!)
Thanks.

I am currently doing the ALEKS Beginning Algebra myself to review seeing that I haven't done math in 6 years or so and have been "enjoying" it. I too HATE math which meant I didn't apply myself in high school and therefore now have to go through all of it again! I would say Beginning Algebra would be the easiest option.
On the ALEKS website here is what they say about ACE credit-recommended ALEKS courses:
Quote:ACE Credit-Recommended ALEKS Courses:
Beginning Algebra
Intermediate Algebra
College Algebra
Trigonometry
College Algebra with Trigonometry
PreCalculus
Introduction to Statistics
Business Statistics
Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences
Instructions to Receive ACE Credit for an ACE Credit-Recommended ALEKS Course:
Register in an ALEKS ACE credit-recommended course and assess at 70% or greater on the course material.
Register with the ACE Credit Online Transcript System and submit a transcript request.
ALEKS Corporation will receive the transcript request and verify if you have assessed at 70% or greater on the course material. This usually takes ALEKS Corporation approximately three business days.
If you have assessed at 70% or greater, you will receive an email from ACE when processing is complete. This usually takes approximately 1-3 business days for ACE to complete.
If your request is denied, you can continue to work in your ALEKS Pie until you have assessed at 70% or greater on the course material, and then resubmit a transcript request following the steps above.
The ACE transcript can be used to request college credit at educational institutions that grant credit for ACE credit-recommended courses.
I don't know if TESC accepts all of them or how much credit is recommended for each course above but those are the ones that you can receive an ACE transcript if you assess at 70% or higher.
Hope this helps!

Understand that you can get credit- but you can never duplicate credit, and some of the ALEKS classes are considered duplicates. There are 4 ALEKS classes that you can take for a total of 12 credits (plus 1 CLEP for 6 more)
Here is the TESC list:
REMEDIAL
001 Beginning Algebra- MAT089, 3 credits *note that's under 100 level, so won't count toward your degree
CHOOSE 1
002 Intermediate Algebra- MAT115, 3 credits *meets minimum math requirement for almost every degree except science, business, or math degrees. Most can stop here without going higher.
CHOOSE 1
CLEP college math MAT102/103, 6 credits *I include this CLEP to show you that this does not duplicate the other maths, meaning after get through intermediate, you could grab these 6 credits with no extra preparation.
CHOOSE 1
003 College Algebra- MAT121, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate College Algebra w/trig
004 College Algebra with Trig- MAT121, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate College Algebra
CHOOSE 1
005 PreCal- MAT129, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate Trig
006 Trig- MAT129, 3 credits *TESC Duplicates PreCal
CHOOSE 1
007 Intro Stats- STA201, 3 credits *TESC Duplicates all other stats
009 Stats for Beh. Science- STA201, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate all other stats
008 Business Stats- OPM351, 3 credits *TESC Duplicates all other stats

TESC will take Aleks Beginning Algebra and use it toward general educational requirements under natural science. Beginning Algebra shows up in a TESC transcript as:
MAT-102 General Math
Hope this helps.

OTCIXS- I am in the same boat! I reeeeeally hate math and was hoping to just do Beginning Algebra and be done with it.
Jennifer- I am confused as to why TESC will not take Beg Algebra as a minimum math requirement?? I was hoping for a miracle On the ACE website this is what they say about Aleks Beg Algebra >>>
"Credit Recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in math . "
Also what kind of time frame would it take to complete both Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Alg. My schedule in January will allow me to work on it daily--about 4 hrs per day. Thanks for any info!

Creative:
TESC will take Beg Alg, I posted the information above.
My son did Beg Alg in one sitting in approx 1 1/2 hrs. He had over 70% on his eval. First time. No math genius either. He used the Mathways Calculator. After it was reported on his ACE transcript he went under his master account and switched to Interm Alg. Same thing happened. He sat there and did his eval high enough and he reported that one to ACE. Then he did Alg. same drill as before. So he got 9 math credits done in 1 month for $20. He does not like math at all.
Good luck with your math

thanks for the info! I just find this math topic so confusing because there seems to be conflicting threads about what TESC will take as a minimum math. Wow, your son did Beg Alg in 1 1/2 hrs--that is fast! Did he have any background in Algebra at all? that is amazing.

High school Algebra thats about it. What did it for him was Mathways. That made it all happen for him. He was very glad to get his month of math behind him so he could get busy with other things. The Aleks eval was approx 25 questions. All you need is 70% or higher.

This needs to be checked and double checked- hell, then check again. TESC has routinely flip-flopped on this specific class. When ALEKS first started, all of us used this class as a 100 level gen ed math. It was accepted and many people here have it on their transcript. Within the past 4-6 months, however, it is getting rejected. You'll have to do a forum search, my apologies for not remember which members specifically have had this dropped down into remedial. So, I'm standing by remedial until it starts to get accepted again. I do know SEVERAL people fought this with Dr Keel (TESC head of advising), however, I think those students were challenging an earlier evaluation where they were given credit then had it removed/denied on a re-evaluation. Proceed with caution, but it's certainly worth a try. (I didn't make up 089, someone here has that on their transcript- lets hope they chime in)

I also remember seeing a few threads stating that beginning algebra doesn't meet TESC requirements anymore, but for some reason I can't find the threads >_>. Oh well, I'll just have to hunker down and do it! Thanks for the great detailed responses!!
