Advisor Question
#1
I received my welcome email from Chelsey Parker at UMPI on 2/6/25. All my transcripts have been evaluated and I can see all of that in my UMPI account. I have tried several times to schedule a call with Chelsey to no avail. But I actually don't even know if I need to talk with her. I need to talk with an advisor.

In my account under "Advisor" it says "none assigned". How do I get an advisor assigned to me?

I really need to discuss my degree plan and register for the Spring semester.

Also, I wanted to talk with the advisor about taking courses on Sophia learning and transferring those to UMPI. I didn't begin Sophia until after I had my other transcripts accepted by UMPI because I needed to see what requirements I would have remaining to fulfill in Gen Ed. I wanted to wait until I spoke with my advisor before beginning Sophia in order to explain my plan and make sure they were ok with it. But I want to take the Sophia courses before beginning the Spring term with UMPI. So I went ahead and began to take the courses.

UMPI accepted 79 transfer credits.

Here are the remaining Gen Ed credits needed and the Sophia Courses I plan to take to fulfill them:

2D Visual Communications (completed)
3A Intro to College Math (completed)
3B Statistics ***Do I need to take another Math course or can Intro to College Math fulfill both 3A and 3B?***
3D Chemistry ***I already have Bio with a lab so Chemistry without a lab should fulfill this requirement, right?***

30 credits remaining which will need to be fulfilled at UMPI:

21 credits in History ***I have fulfilled all of the basic LL History credits and 3 credits of UL History***
9 credits in Electives

You don't mention when your start date is at UMPI or which degree you're completing. Your degree will determine the math requirements. You mention the spring term but there are 2 of them and Spring 1 is well underway.

You will need chem without the lab for 3D.

Advisors aren't typically going to tell you what to take outside of UMPI.

I want the advisor to confirm the Gen Ed courses I need to complete my degree. Once I have that information, I will be able to take the corresponding courses through Sophia Learning and then transfer them to UMPI. After reviewing my degree plan, I believe I know what is needed as far as Gen Ed courses but I would like to confirm that with an advisor so I have a clear understanding of what is needed. I think that is a reasonable expectation. I can't guess what I need to take.

Also, I can't register for any courses until I speak with an advisor. So it is imperative that I speak with someone sooner rather than later to plan out the courses I need to complete.

Basically, I would get in contact with them if you've not been assigned an academic advisor or success coach, you want to get the info completed before the session starts: https://www.umpi.edu/offices/advising/#staff

They should be reaching out to you for Spring 2 soon. They don't typically contact students weeks or month in advance. Have you checked your UMPI email? That's where they'll contact you. If all of your transcripts are evaluated you'll be able to see on MaineStreet what areas of the GEC you still need to complete. The advisors don't usually tell you what to take at Sophia. You usually tell them what you're taking then send the transcript when you've completed the courses.

I do have a success coach, Chelsey Parker. I have called and emailed her several times. She has replied to my email but never scheduled a time to speak with me which I have requested and given her my availability several times. This morning I emailed her and cc'd the other advisors using the link you posted for me. Hopefully, one of them will respond on Monday and we can schedule a call.

I do see the courses I need to complete the Gen Ed requirements but I did have a couple of questions to clarify, such as do I need to complete two different courses to satisfy 3A and 3B or if I take Intro to College Math will that satisfy both requirements? I also want to make sure they know I will be transferring the courses from Sophia and confirm the courses I am taking will satisfy those Gen Ed requirements. I used the wiki UMPI gen ed post in this forum to find the courses which should satisfy these requirements.

I want to ensure I know exactly what is required since my goal is to finish all my courses needed during the Spring 2 term. I'm just a little anxious and want to make sure I completely understand everything so I don't have any problems later because I missed something crucial.

Thank you so much for all your help.

A single course can cover more than one GEC requirement. In the case of the math requirement, it covers both 3A and 3B - source: my friend is doing their degree at UMPI right now.

Following the plans on the Wiki gets you there 100% of the way:

Certs Completed: Scrum CSPO/CSM | Google PM/Data Analytics/Marketing

I researched the courses I need using the wiki UMPI gen ed page which shows the corresponding Sophia courses. I will be telling them what I am taking and sending the transcript once they are completed. I would like confirmation from an advisor that those courses will satisfy the requirements. I would think they could look up that information. I check my UMPI email obsessively awaiting a reply from Chelsey Parker. I have emailed her to schedule a call and I have called and left her voicemails but she has not responded in a few days. I have done everything needed per her introduction email to me. I posted a link to my UMPI Degree Plan Progress which does show the courses I need to complete. The Spring 2 term registration deadline is March 4th, 2.5 weeks from now.

I sent another email this morning to Chelsey and cc'd the other advisors listed on the website. Hopefully, I will be able to speak with someone on Monday or Tuesday. I'm anxious to get everything rolling!

Bless you!!!! I have used that plan. The way they used my transfer credits was confusing to me which is why I had that question. I don't want to take any courses I don't need. Here's a link to my degree plan progress from UMPI https://drive.google.com/file/d/1swbU02w...sp=sharing. Can you look at it and see if you think I'm correct in my assessment of the courses I need to take through Sophia? I would be so appreciative!
