Hi Everyone,
I'm a newbie and just took and passed my first Excelsior exam thanks to the advice of this forum! I have targeted the DSST Business Ethics exam next and having a bunch of difficulty getting information and hope I can get some advice. I did a search of test facilities in my state and 3 either no longer administer the test or one had no idea what I was referring to (really bizarre). My questions to experienced DSST exam takers:
1) How did you get the actual exam scheduled? Did you call and schedule directly with the location?
2) After you completed the exam, how long did it take the credits to post to your school transcript?
I did searches and tried to figure out the DSST website (which is terrible). The Excelsior Exam payment and scheduling was straightforward and I am at a loss with this one.
Thanks in advance!

You schedule the exam directly with the testing location. I took my CLEPs and DSSTs at National University. They will charge you a testing fee. Separately, you pay for the exam itself through the DSST website. You will end up with an email to print out that you bring along to the testing center that shows you paid for the exam.

I don't know which state you're in, but where I am the community colleges or universities usually administer the CLEP's and DSST's. These tests are not widely used outside of this forum, so you may need to talk to more than one person before you can get a real answer. I know that when I asked at my community college, the first few people I spoke to said that they never heard of it or they don't give it, but they actually do.

I ended up at a for profit college(U of Phoenix) to take my DSSTs whereas I did my CLEPs at a state university. I had to call both of them directly to schedule. The DSST one directly and the CLEP one after buying the voucher. It took about 2 weeks for TESU to get & acknowledge the DSST but they had a campus closing storm in that time frame.
You can find where to take it here. http://getcollegecredit.com/institutions/search
Make sure you uncheck "institutions that accept DSST for credit" when you search.

Sometimes the phone number for the DSST leads to a receptionist who has no idea and says "no DSST here." At my testing site (school), the receptionist is also the testing administrator. At other places, you're betting off looking for the phone number of the school's testing center and asking them instead of assuming the receptionist is correct.
I agree University of Phoenix is very likely to do both DSST and CLEP. Military is a huge part of the business.

Thank you all for the replies. I have now called 4 schools (including my area community college) and most said they used to administer the test but not anymore. Now I wonder if I'm just speaking to the wrong people. Will keep trying, but it's very frustrating when there's so little info about how to go about this. I'll try UoP next, thanks @TrailRunr!

I took one last year! I made an appointment at the local college test center and at the appointed time I went in and made a credit card payment online then I got to take the test. You do need to set up an account with DSST with the destination for were your transcript is going before you take the test. I'm planning on taking two more after my current semester ends so if the process has changed since last year I'd appreciate any more recent information.
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

I too have found that the info on testing sites on the DSST website is not always current. Frustrating, but what can you do?
Contact the Testing Center of the school directly; there's usually information about how to contact them on the school's website.
You will pay a proctoring fee to the testing site (amount and forms of payment entirely at their discretion), and a test fee to DSST by credit card through the DSST website, at the time you take the test. (Unlike CLEP, you can't pre-pay the test fee.) You can set up a DSST account before taking the test, or at the time you take the test.
I think TESU received the transcript from DSST within a week, but TESU then took more than a month to actually post the credits on my evaluation.

Thank you diminutive! I wasn't sure if you pay online for the exam from where you register or the website said to pay the test center. This helps!

Thanks EI2HCB, happy to report back once I've figured out how to schedule and take the exam.
