ACE Credits from Sophia
#1
I knew about this, but I always forget about it because it's not anything spectacular. I think I read the company was bought out by Capella so that Capella could position itself to compete with MOOCs. Sophia charges $110 per credit hour and they offer College Algebra (yawn), Introduction to Psychology (yawn), Human Biology, Introduction to Sociology (yawn), and Introduction to Statistics (yawn).

There was no interest in this thread when it was initially posted, but I think this option is worth a look. They have since added more ACE-approved courses: Conflict Resolution, Visual Communications, Introduction to Art History, Approaches to Studying Religions, Accounting (yawn), and Microeconomics (yawn).

At $329/course, I don't see any reason why anyone would choose Sophia over StraighterLine.

They offer several courses that aren't offered by Straighterline.

I'm certain that the Art History course would fall into a fine arts category at COSC. Straighterline doesn't offer any courses that fulfill this requirement, so I'd say this is a good find.

I'm interested to know how the Big 3 will transcribe Visual Communications and Conflict Resolution. Those are two courses you don't normally see. Pretty neat.

ETA: Plus, any company that uses Bill Nye to advertise their product is alright in my book. Yes, I do enjoy having my childhood sold back to me.

For TESC using the PLA database, Visual communications might be "History of Visual Communications (ART-368)" and Conflict Resolution could be either "Conflict Resolution (COM-435)" or "Conflict Resolution (SOC-434)".

Something I find intriguing is how the promotional material shows that it has several different learning options available for each area of content, and that these options appeal to different types of learners. This would be helpful if one student were a visual learner, and another were an auditory learner, they both have options for mastering the same content. I'm considering taking a course, just to support the program so they can grow.
