After having just finished the courses for the certificate from FEMA, I can say that those courses are very interesting. In addition, some of the topics are ones that would either be easy (if you already took management tests/courses), or help you prior to taking those courses/exams. The range of topics is fascinating, and I will be taking more.

jbraz45 Wrote:I spoke to a advisor today regarding my BALS and asked her if and how my currernt FEMA credits fit into the AAS degree we are discussing and I was told no FEMAS fit into this degree. They are either free electives or can be used towards a Homeland Security degree. I was a little confused on this subject after the phone call. I guess I should try to speak to another advisor regarding this.
I originally had this problem as well, so after some advise from the forums I just called back and asked them to add it to my degree plan. As of yesterday my FEMA credits were finally evaluated. They plug right into the career track area. Because I am using military TA I have to have 9 credits to gain residency so right now I am taking Interpersonal Communications then next I will take the 6 credit Environmental science class and be done. Pretty Awesome!

I have a sneaking suspicion what may be happening is the advisor hears only enviromental + associates. They are probably accessing the ASAST environmental sciences instead of the AAS environmental safety & security tech degree. If so they are giving the correct advice, FEMA courses would not be acceptable for the ASAST program.

This thread is amazing. Wow. I want to thank everyone for their insight. I'm currently 2 courses away (Eng. II & Alg. I) from applying for my evaluation, but I'm so stoked. Hopefully I'd be able to receive the AAS in Enviroment, Safety and Security Technologies by June.

Hi guys! I'm trying to use the search engine on the forum to find the FEMAS that count as Social Science credits? I'm having no luck. Aren't or weren't there two or three FEMAS that count as social sciences? If not can anyone re confirm that?
Thanks again!

I think it was rickyjo who used fire science courses at Excelsior. If memory serves those courses were laundered through clackamus (sp?) or another school. Probably easier to just take an added clep or dsst.

Has anyone ever been employed because of this degree? If so what field. I always hear about people getting this degree and degree. Does having this AAS Environmental safety degree help you at all?

I have had this conversation several times, but I don't know if anything has come out of it. Here are some threads to look through:

I have had no luck with getting any safety-related jobs or even interviews with this degree. Honestly, the courses I took didn't even prepare me for any safety-related jobs (criminal justice and a few FEMAs). My experience is in security and I have no OSHA training. From the job openings I've seen in San Antonio, safety jobs want experience and/or a bachelor's degree in a science or safety-related field. Now, my social science degree has landed me several interviews, even for jobs requiring a criminal justice degree. I even qualify to register as a licensed chemical dependency counselor intern in Texas. My degree waives the 270-hour substance abuse education and 300-hour practicum requirements. Two years of supervised experience and passage of the exams will make me a full chemical dependency counselor.
