I also would love to complete the AAS along with the BALS I'm currently chasing. I currently have 9 Fema credits. I have a qustion though. Does it matter which FEMAS are chosen or can it be any of them?

I don't understand what this degree is for and the info at TESC's website wasn't very clear in that regard. Would someone please explain? Thanks.

You're welcome. Congrats on finishing the degree too! Smile

This was the list effective Aug 1 2011 http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...post110397

It's been six months, you may want to contact the school and ask if there is an updated list.

Here is the link to SandraNCs TESC Equivalencies lists, you will probably find the information useful. http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...post117772

Hello IJ,

The degree area of study has three paths which allows us to tailor it to our specific career -- for example a lab technician, utility company manager, safety coordinator, chemical facilties manager, emergency management, etc....

The reason this degree was important to me was I have many years experience working in the clinical research and medical affairs departments. Because of my experience I am also a member of the company safety committee. In my job I work on safety, security and environmental issues on a daily basis in one shape or form... be it clinical research, clinical trials, product safety and tampering, adverse events, regulatory issues, OSHA and HIPPA compliance. I also help decide on IT usage / security / compliance for our databases. I felt this degree (AAS) along with the BSBA and MS are a more appropriate path for my career (clinical operations and management), because I have absolutely no interest in the other route - a medical degree. Smile

Interesting. How do you "tailor" it towards one of the jobs you mentioned? Do you take certain courses? It sounds like it couldn't hurt for me to have this with my BSBA, especially as safety coordinator. Thanks.

IJ,

I think that would be a great idea! I didn't design the area of study because I found out about it very late when Elinor posted on the subject. At the time I was actually finishing up my BSBA but after running a what if scenario realized I had already met the requirements. Even though I had enough credits, TESC policy states I had to take 12 new credits since my last degree (which was only 9 new fema). If I had more time, I probably would have also taken the six credit environmental course. I actually purchased a used copy of the book to read at a later date because of interest. I may have also sought out courses on public health, compliance and risk mgmt.

Initially the 18 fema courses I took were geared towards specific subject matter: all the radiological courses, medical/hazard materials and mitigation, emergency management and the management series (PDS)courses. The new credits were just to finish up since I was in the grad queu. The two additional courses that filled my area of study were criminal justice and business law. My AAS ES&ST degree plan is here. Actually, you would be surprised at how much detail and important information is learned through the FEMA courses. For example, I learned even more about chemical spills, radioactive emergencies, drug incidents, what to do in certain disaster cases/the chain of command. The fact that these courses were free of charge still boggles the mind. I talk about them with anyone that will listen. The true blessing is I was able to use the coursework in two ways: 1) free college credit and 2) ongoing training & education (CEUs) which are added to my training file.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I think I might do this one myself then. It certainly can't hurt, especially if all I need to do is one more DSST (Environment & Humanity) plus free FEMA courses. I'll keep this in mind when I'm ready to register for the BSBA. Smile

I spoke to a advisor today regarding my BALS and asked her if and how my currernt FEMA credits fit into the AAS degree we are discussing and I was told no FEMAS fit into this degree. They are either free electives or can be used towards a Homeland Security degree. I was a little confused on this subject after the phone call. I guess I should try to speak to another advisor regarding this.

I graduated with a BA History & AAS Enviro... in December - I had 22 Fema credits - they were applied to Free Electives for the BA - unfortunately, I didn't print out the transcript for the AAS but I know that those 22 Fema credits did apply to my AAS degree. Check Elinor's degree plan - she shows how the Femas applied to her AAS degree.
