A few weeks ago while searching through the degree wiki I came across Bricabrac's degree plan for her AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies. It showed that she used FEMA credits to fill almost all of the career track credits. I was excited about the possibility of doing this as well while working towards my B.A. I called to speak with an advisor this morning and was told the FEMA credits will only count as electives. Has anyone else tried to complete this degree in this fashion? Was this a change they have recently implemented?

AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies

Hi,
I did the AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies at the same time I got my BA in History. I've attached the document I made from the evaluation that TESC sent me for the AAS. I used mostly FEMAs to get it, but I was using those to get the electives for my history degree anyway. Perhaps their policy has changed in the last few months, but I didn't have any trouble with the AAS. I didn't utilize an adviser though, so perhaps all the TESC problems/questions/confusion stem from them! j/k Hope this helps! I don't make it over here too often anymore, but feel free to contact me if you have any questions: reformedtngirl[at]gmail[dot]com -Laura Less than 1 minute ago">AAS_Environmental, Safety and Security Technologies.docx (Size: 14.31 KB / Downloads: 3) ~ Laura ~

Thank you for the reply, that looks a lot like how Bricabrac's plan looked, I was hoping to do the same as I have around 21 FEMA credits. My FEMA credits were just recieved by TESC about two weeks ago. I am interested to see how the academic evaluation system plugs them in once they are evaluated. I am hoping it is an error by the advisor. I guess time will tell once my FEMA credits are plugged in.

Bricabrac was able to use FEMA on her AAS, the advisor you spoke with is misinformed. I had my AAS in Environmental approved last Aug. The policies have not changed since then. Call back and speak with another advisor or put in a trouble ticket. It took me awhile to get my plan approved because my previous BA was in Natural Science and Math. My degree plan for the AAS is also posted on the Wiki page. You should be able to use at least 9 FEMA's, they may just tell you which ones they have to be.

Hello nbmorton,
Unfortunately each year brings changes so I really could not say one way or the other whether that advisor is wrong. Are you enrolled? What she/he may have been referring to is electives towards your BA. If already enrolled you can request dual enrollment with a phone call to advising; just ask that they add the AAS degree program. Do not start talking too much so they look for special approval. You just want the program added to your student account. After hanging up log in to the online student account and look at the AAS academic evaluation to see where those FEMA credits would fall. You should be good if enrolled in this calendar year (2011-2012) or prior. Can't speak to what may/may not change for next year (2012-2013) since the Applied Science & Technology school is undergoing additional credentialing so program requirements may change because of it. We need to keep in mind this degree is not awarded through the Heavin Arts School (liberal arts) it is through the Applied Science & Technology School. Good luck! Thanks Bricabrac! I will try and set up another advising appointment to get it added to my plan. The FEMA credits I have submitted have yet to show up on my evaluation so maybe if I just go ahead and add it they will slide in where they are supposed. Its worth a shot at least...

Nbmorton,
Great, glad to hear you are already an enrolled student! The good news is you will not need a formal phone appointment; just call in to the advising hotline, whoever picks up can quickly add the AAS program by just clicking a few keys and you're all set. Once those fema credits have been officially evaluated and added to your TESC transcript (usually 4-6 wks from receipt) run the AAS evaluation and the credits should populate in the AAS area of study (as long as you took approved courses). Good luck with your programs! "Setting a goal is not the main thing. Bricabrac gave good advice. The policy could have changed, but the advisors at TESC are notorious for giving out erroneous information. I used FEMAs for the AAS when I applied in October and my degree was just conferred last month.

I don't get on here very often anymore, and I've obviously forgotten how to do these things. I've edited my post, and replaced the attachment with one that I made for the AAS from the evaluation, but that is without all the personal info. ~ Laura ~
