A close call...
#1
Today I went into the testing center with too much confidence perhaps. I hear people getting really high scores (low 70s, high 60s) on the Intro. to Psychology CLEP exam. I studied a week for this exam and felt like I was ready. Everyone tells me that this CLEP is one of the easier ones. Well, I took it and to my surprise I only got a 52 on it  So much for the easiness. The other two CLEPs (Intro to Mgmt and Info. Systems & App.) I actually did better on but I thought they were supposed to be a little bit more challenging than the Psych CLEP or so I have heard... I'm taking the Intro. to Sociology next week. Sad I have heard that alot of the Psych stuff overlaps into the Soci. exam... Is that true? How can I get a better grade on the Soci. CLEP? I also noticed there is merely 150 odd questions for the Soci IC while the Psych. IC has well over 300 questions. So my question is, is it possible to pass the Soci. CLEP with just studying from the Soci. IC cards ONLY? :p Any suggestions is much appreciated Big Grin

cheer up! Usually, CLEPs are just Pass/Fail anyway, so a 52 is just as good as an 80, as far as you are concerned. You did great! Wink

Look at it this way, imagine how you would have felt if it were 4 points lower and a fail, you would have been begging for the 52. Good Job! Now press on to the next obstacle in the way of you earning your degree!

I have taken the Intro to Sociology using just IC for a week....well maybe a few nights for a couple of hours, and pulled out a B. You will do better if you give it a full week. Good Luck! Lee

I think a week of studying will be ok. Try to use more than one source of materials.

You should be fine using just our materials, but I would recommend also going through the Collegeboard study guide's sample questions. That can boost your score a few points!

Good luck.......

for those who have ONLY taken the Intro. to Sociology CLEP, did you guys also read through the Intro. to Psychology IC cards or did you only concentrate on what the Sociology IC cards had to cover? I just want to know if it's enough to go through the Sociology IC cards and pass?

I just read the IC Sociology cards until I had them memorized. Here is how I do it: (I'm sure we all have our own way)

1. I read through the material once, one section at a time, concentrating on key/new words, concepts, and names. Then I'll keep going through that section until I can pretty much recite the answer before I click on it. VERY important..... I Do Not get too wrapped up on the word in the blank; this is often not important; learning the question and complete answer is the key to knowing the subject. I used to sit there and type the answer in but I suck at typing and was constantly getting the answer wrong because I misspelled the word/s. I now do it all in my head. If the section is 60-75 questions long I break it in half as it's easier for me to learn in 30 question increments.

2,. After I know that one section inside and out, I move to the next one and do the same thing. I recommend staying in the order in which they are presented. I started out breaking them up by number of questions but didn’t understand as well as if I'd stayed in order.

3. After I've completed the series, I then go into review mode. At this stage, I am only missing the odd word here or there and only have to go through each section twice before I’m rattling it off like I wrote it. .

Once I get to where I'm reciting, pretty much verbatim, I take the test the next day. It's worked for me so farSmile After the test take a day or two to brain dump and start the process all over again. I try to keep an objective mind about the subject. I find if I go into it negatively (Civil War), I have a harder time concentrating. It’s sort of like brainwashing yourself into believing the subject is interesting, I often walk away with some tidbits that actually were…..

Hope this helps someone out there, Lee
