What do you call this kind of learning, and who offers it?
#1
I am continuing to pore through the threads.

I found this one: Kentucky TCS

In this, the writer discusses a regionally accredited school, that offers community college credit (instead of ACE / pass equivalent) education.

The trick is, it almost sounds like there is little to no teacher interaction and little, what do you call it? Where you have students you have to interact with and do communal projects?

I like this kind of learning. I read really, really fast, and like the idea of getting approved for a class, then taking a night or two a week and churning through the modules. Having to log in and wait on other students, or worse, if I get a busy week and can't pull my weight concerns me.

He says it is similar to straighterline, except you can take the pre-test, and if you do 90% or more, you don't have to slog through the material (like the TEEX courses).

He also says the tests aren't proctored.

I like the idea of testing on my own terms, instead of having to take off work and buying a seat at the local prometrix center (it is cramped in that place!)

So, the cost is over double what my local cc charges per credit (a little over $500 a course, it seems). SL says they cost about $150 a course, but then it's straighterline, and not a college.

My question is, are there other places like this at a more competitive fee structure? If I want to be able to eventually go on to an advanced degree, will most places make a deal out of SL/TECEP/ACE versus cc transcripted credits?

Thanks~!

It's called competency-based education. These types of programs are regularly discussed on this forum. WGU, University of Wisconsin, Hodges University, Patten University, Capella, SNHU/College for America, Brandman University, and Northern Arizona University are just some of the schools that offer competency-based programs.

sound similar to competency base education. Patten, WGU (non-IT if you want to avoid testing centers)

WGU is around $2500/6 months....finish as many courses as you can in that time.

I think testing out still has a lot to offer most students, especially if you know as much as you claim to, but there is nothing wrong with competency based education, WGU and the like are great programs.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

This isn't the first time this phrase has come up on this board.

For the record, there is a *ton* of stuff I know nothing, nothing about. Sports scores, pop culture from the last five years (seriously. who are these singers?), growing things.

I have been encouraged to go on shows like jeopardy. I have no interest. More than one person has been confused by the fact that I like to learn simply for the fact of knowing a topic.

>>> In this spot, I listed a few things to support my assertions. Every iteration on reread comes off arrogant and know-it-all. I am both, but I don't see it furthering the conversation here, especially considering my considerable knowledge deficit in academics.:imwithstupid:

I'm just burnt out, slightly bitter, and really, really need to get out of the house and go hiking or something, clear my head. Too many perceived responsibilities. Google and smartphones have ruined my uniqueness. If you know how to craft a search query, you can know pretty much everything I've spent a lifetime learning and doing. (shrugs)

here, I'll play y'all the song of my people: :nopity: lol
