100% Omg....

I just had to share this story for a couple of reasons:
1) I'm totally in shock and wanted to share Wink
2) Just in case it helps anyone here who would be in the same situation

So here's the story..This weekend, I had a big paper due and unfortunately I ended up with the absolute worst food poisoning of my life. Yes I spent Friday night in the ER. Sad

Saturday I was still too sick to consider writing my paper and Sunday I didn't feel a lot better. However, I knew that I had to turn it in by Sunday evening, so I forced myself to do it.

This paper would have been hard enough in my condition, but it was covering a topic that didn't particularly interest me about two articles that I hadn't even finished reading. Not to mention that as you probably already know from my many other posts, my paper had to be written in Spanish. I really struggle in Spanish when I'm sick or tired, so all-in-all it was just a TERRIBLE paper. I was embarrassed to turn it in, but after a couple of miserable hours working on it, I briefly considered scanning a copy of my ER paperwork to explain the poor work, but knowing that teachers get excuses by the dozen, I just decided to suck it up and accept the bad grade that I would inevitably get.

Well.. yesterday our teacher posted on the class forum and said that he wasn't going to grade our papers from the weekend until we emailed him and analyzed our work based on his original criteria, told him what we should be graded and why. (I guess none of us did a good job!) Anyhow, I again considered scanning my ER paperwork and just saying "sorry I know it's bad, but I was deathly ill." Anyhow, instead I sent an honest critique of the paper, explaining exactly what I did wrong and why the paper was only a partial response to the initial assignment. I explained what I should do better if I were to re-write the paper and told him that at best, if he was very feeling generous, I should be graded an 80%.

I got my score this evening with 100% Smile Turns out that no one did a good job and that the only ones that ended up with passing grades were those of us who were entirely honest and able to see where we went wrong. OMG.. I'm still totally in disbelief.

As usual, you do amazing work. Food poisoning is so draining, it's impressive that you could do anything. Congratulations on being able to do anything, and then for being honest and aware of your paper's deficiencies.

Awww thank you!!

I lived in Mexico for several years so I really thought that I had already had every single stomach bug out there already. Guess not!

What I have learned re: food poisoning is to NEVER EVER (no matter how good it looks) order an unpopular item at a restaurant. If they don't sell much of it, it is probably not fresh.

Congratulations on the 100% - Your experience just shows that honesty is the best policy and that excuses should be used as a last recourse instead of a first.
Your professor obviously recognized your maturity in judging your own work and felt your critique justified this perfect score.
A thousand huzzahs to you, Burbuja - You certainly are Masters material!!

Right there is a benefit to having classmates!

At NCU, I have no classmates, its just me and the mentor so they can compare my paper based on previous individuals' papers but they don't get a whole class full of assignment 2's at one time.
