Is the BS in Business degree path on bain4weeks still valid? extreme newbie here
Posted by: tonywantsadegree - 10-15-2012, 08:52 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (25)

Hello resourceful people! My name is Tony, I'm 38 years old, I manage 60 people on a help desk and I have 0 college credits! It's time for me to change that and I want to take the smartest straight-line path that I can. I googled "how to get a degree quickly' a few days ago and it led me to bain4weeks.com. I guess I was different than some I've read about where I didn't a get smart quick scheme, but I was fascinated by the wealth of information that was given out for free. After hours browsing through the site I click the "BS in Business" link and was in awe at how Lawrie detailed the test that I needed to take as well as directed me to the necessary resources need to prepare for the exams. What I also noticed was the copyright on the site being up until 2004 so I started wondering if the information is still accurate? I'm actually looking at Excelsior's Bachelor of Science in Business with concentration in Marketing as the degree that I want to pursue. I know it's far from what I'm doing now and that's because I'm over IT.

I've seen a few people on here post their Degree plan, but honestly I'm still completely lost when it comes to putting together the exact exams that I will need to take to complete my degree. I would like to accumulate a GPA, but again I'm still not clear if it's completely necessary to swap certain exams just for the two digit grade. Lastly, my ultimate goal is to test out of this degree and go right into my MBA which is put me close to being on track at my age. Can someone offer me remedial education on how/where I start putting my degree plan together? Do I have to enroll in Excelsior before an advisor will advise me on this plan?

Thanks a million and you guys are a huge inspiration to those of us that thought we had to attend College for 6 years to get a degree while working.

  Passed American Gov. Today!
Posted by: dddollars - 10-15-2012, 08:45 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

This the first CLEP I have taken so naturally I was not sure what to think. It was hard no doubt! I heard about CLEP tests about six months ago and thought the idea was pretty cool. I am a senior in high school and I was curious if I could pass one with little to no study involved... I would consider myself a political junkie (hints the reason why I picked American Gov.). I probably spent 30min to an hour with the instantcert questions - thats to the extent of my studying for the test. I did not realize until I had already decided to take American Gov. that it is considered one of the harder ones.. Having said that I do think if you had little to no interest in government this would be almost impossible to pass without a lot of preparation.

Anyway those are my impressions. I have enjoyed reading this forum... Hopefully I will continue to have success with theses tests.

Max amount of cleps you can take while in AF active duty?
Posted by: Sorbik - 10-15-2012, 08:29 PM - Forum: Military Discussion - Replies (4)

I've passed 13 now and just happen to read something in the PDG about how the Air Force will pay for 60 credits through Cleps/Dantes. I don't remember the exact terminology as my PDG is at work atm but does anyone know if there really is a limit on the amount of cleps/dantes you can take?

Straighterline Comp II How many tests?
Posted by: SNY_82 - 10-15-2012, 07:48 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

I have just completed the tests 1-8 available for English Comp II. I thought at this point I would almost be completely done with the course. However, from the way it sounds, this only gets me to midterm? Could someone please advised? I wasted two months of 99 due to stalling and was hoping to get it all done by end of this month prior to proctoring beginning. I am hoping I do not have another set of tests to complete once I am done with the 10th test. Someone shine some light please Smile

TESC BA Psych Degree Plan NEWBIE
Posted by: hudspithk - 10-14-2012, 10:10 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (8)

I just found out about these alternative college credits two days ago. I've gone to a 4 year university before and a community college but never did well balancing work and classes. I've read and read as much information as I could from this forum and decided to start studying and taking exams. I just finished my degree plan (finally) and I was hoping some of you guys could look over it and let me know if I need to change anything or if something wont work or if there's just a simpler option. Thank you so much for any help you can give !

Made a mistake in regards to AAS Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies
Posted by: ronaldemail1 - 10-14-2012, 05:44 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (7)

I submitted all my FEMA credits in advance. I got an Associate and I am working still on my bachelor.

When I asked if I could get the AAS Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies, I was told that
I would need 12 new credits (reviewed the Catalog and it says the same). Is there a way to fill out
the concentration courses for this degree with others that are not from FEMA (I think I have used
up all FEMA). Any advice or suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

  Panama Canal Transcripts
Posted by: 29palms - 10-14-2012, 08:38 AM - Forum: Military Discussion - Replies (2)

I attended this school in the Panama Canal Zone in 80-81. A year's worth of college. Totally accredited, but when the Canal Zone disappeared in 1999, the college, which became part of the Department of Defense or (DOD), their records, were sent to Fort Benning. I since appllied to TESC to get evaluated, however, apparantly, Fort Benning doesn't seem to have my transcripts, or having trouble finding them. TESC has not received them. I got an email from a lady that stated that they were looking for my transcripts and that I should hear something next week. Well, that was sent September 20th. I since resubmitted my request for transcripts, and so far, two unanswered emails. So that is why I haven't pitched much here lately, was really waiting for my complete transcripts and then possibly begin to take courses but I must know exactly where I stand. Here is the email I received from the Fort Benning group.......

Mr. 29palms

We are currently searching our records for your transcripts. You should hear something next week.

  Calculus CLEP
Posted by: ticcup - 10-14-2012, 04:06 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - No Replies

Is it possible to teach someone enough math necessary to pass the Calculus CLEP in 2 months, if they've never taken math before?

I took the College Mathematics exam last year to meet requirements for admission to a science degree program in Scandinavia.. I took math through AP Calculus in high school, but a year of university or 3 CLEPs were required for admission for those with an American education.

My boyfriend is Scottish and never took math at a higher level. He's applying to the same program for this year, but is completely missing the math requirement to get in (R1, similar to Precalculus). I had prepared him for the College Mathematics test that I took, since we couldn't figure out a way for him to take his Scottish highers from another country. He emailed the admission office to be certain that he, as a Brit, could take the American test. They said yes, but that they had just changed the requirements, and the only test now allowed was the Calculus CLEP.. even though that is meant to cover the higher level math R2, which he doesn't need.

It's a bit strange to me since the math I'm taking at university now is lower level than anything we did in AP Calculus, so they're asking him to pass a test at a higher level than he will actually learn at university.. but that doesn't change the fact that he now has to pass it.

I've already taught him enough to pass the College Math CLEP but only what's specific to the test. He's taken advanced highers in science before (Chemistry, Biology, Physics), but he knows pretty much nothing else about math. Is it possible for him to learn what he needs to know in only a couple of months? I should add that I took Calculus 13 years ago, so I'll have to relearn it in order to teach him. I don't know if he should take the CLEP in December so he has another chance to take it in June (it's a 6 month wait right?) when final grades are due, or if he should take longer to prepare but with only one shot to pass.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

  SL policy change clarification/opinions please:
Posted by: JJ65 - 10-13-2012, 10:48 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

With the change to a proctored final exam which will serve no substantive purpose other than a "perceived" revenue generator for SL, my question is on their wording of the policy.
"for all final exams to be proctored takes effect for courses purchased on or after November 1, 2012"

As I read it this one would believe you could "purchase" all the courses you are looking at completing prior to November 1,2012 and then work through them at an average pace and not be subject to the cost of the proctored final. Is this only wishful thinking?
