  One down, one to go.
Posted by: Bunbu - 09-11-2012, 01:59 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (4)

All this time I couldn't decide between a degree in communications and one in Computer Science. To be honest I love computers and programming but I hate the frantic pace in which the industry moves. My skills are outdated every couple of years so I'm forced to reevaluate my knowledge in order to keep up with the rest of the industry. On the other hand, I always thought that the Liberal Arts (although very underrated by today’s trade-specific education) provide the individual with those think-outside-the-box tools that employers appreciate but often overlook when the resume does not show a quantifiable degree.

Well, without planning it (or maybe at a subconscious level) I just realized I have completed an AA in Communications and I’m 6 classes away from a BA in Computer Science. I thought for the last three years I was procrastinating every time I switched majors from computers to communications and back when in reality I was succumbing to my degree bipolarity disorder. If only I had applied myself I’d probably be on a Master’s right now but the beauty of the Big 3 is that I was able to complete an AA, be on my way to a Bachelor’s, work full time, not miss a single minute of my wonderful family, and avoid debt.

CLEP Bio Resource: Anatomy of Plant Growth
Posted by: tylisasweet - 09-11-2012, 01:11 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - No Replies

I haven't gone through all the specific exam feedback yet so I don't know if this has already been posted, and I haven't taken my test yet so I don't know how important this is, but this is a website that really helped me understand primary and secondary growth of plants. It really helped me visualize anything and was presented in this great, easy-to-understand format that would help many different types of learners. Just thought I'd share it with y'all! Smile

  ALEKs vs SL
Posted by: johnami - 09-11-2012, 10:36 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

A post on another thread brings up this question - how do you compare ALEKs with Straighterline, knowing of course that ALEKs has only math classes? I don't mean that either is bad, I am just looking for input on which is easier, shorter, etc.

CLEP and two forms of photo ID
Posted by: sypher - 09-10-2012, 04:03 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (26)

Guess I missed this in my research...went to take my first CLEP today at the local CC and they needed two forms of photo ID. All I have is drivers license and I'm not a student there so I don't have a student id card. I guess I will go get a passport. Kinda annoyed as I have been studying and was planning on taking 3 exams this week.

  Straighterline discount
Posted by: mymelody - 09-10-2012, 11:38 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (15)

Here are a couple of straighterline discount.

Enter (PSAFCF) without bracket, for first course free with 99 dollar monthly subscription.
Here's a 10 dollar discount for your next course (campusquad071029).
Straighterline's discount
If the 10 dollar discount expire, try to get lost on their website as in finding yourself in 404 error webpage. That's how I found my 10 dollar off. Confusedmilelol:

To those who are unfamiliar with straighterline, it's an ace approved online company that rewards college credits for completion of their courses. Right now, I only tried one course and that is intro to psychology. To pass this course, I need an average of 70% from 4 quizzes and 1 final examine. It's not hard and it's certainly much more affordable than Clep.

I was going to make this thread after I use the 10 dollar discount twice to see if it works every time. Remember to use the first discount and then when you finish passing the course, select a new one using the second discount. Anyway, tell me how it goes, I can't finish my first course since I'm sick and working too much hours right now. :roflol:

P.s - They also give 25 dollars for referral, so if you're new, please post here and ask someone to send you a referral link. And hopefully we can start a chain so everyone can save some money on books! :hurray:

  US History 1 or 2?
Posted by: gilliam_III - 09-10-2012, 02:25 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (6)

I have the option to take US History 1 or 2, and I have until the end of September to pass one of the two. My school is also making me take an essay portion administered by them. For context on background, 4.0 student in math and passed the biology CLEP exam after a week of hard studying with a 65.

I hear US history 1 is the easiest. So, I was planning on studying for a couple of days with Wikipedia/random links and Petersons then giving it a shot. If I fail, I'll take a couple of weeks and study hard for 2. What do you think of my strategy?

Also, do you think with IC and Petersons, you'd be confident writing an essay exam after the multiple choice part?

Here is what a history professor at my school told me to be prepared for on the essay exam for US History 2:

The growth of the US government in the post Civil War era from a small government to the system that we have now. Points of growth are the Progressive Era, the New Deal, and the Great Society.

The evolution of the US Constitution since the Civil War: the 14th-16th amendments in the post war era; the right for women to vote; prohibition and its repeal. Look at the shifts in the US Supreme Court surrounding the Civil Rights movement.

The immigration story: note who came before 1900, in the 1900-1920 era, the shutting of the gates 1924-1965, and the new immigration post 1965. Who came? Where did they settle? How were they received? How did they make a life for themselves?

The Civil Rights/women's rights/human rights stories from the 1870s to the present.

The changing economy and US relations with the world. What was produced? Where was it produced? How did trade and production shape our relationship with the world. Look at late 19th century imperialism, the growth of the US on the world stage following WWI and especially following WWII, the Cold War, the post-Cold War era.

Be familiar with the major eras and wars: Gilded Age, Progressive Era, WWI, 1920s, Depression, WWII and after, 1960s, 1970s, etc. Know major events and turning points.

Thank you for any adice you can give.

Center for Domestic Preparedness Classes evaluated at TESC
Posted by: KUJO - 09-10-2012, 01:30 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello,

Has anyone had courses taken at Department of Homeland Security's Center for Domestic Preparedness evaluated for credit at TESC. They are resident classes. I know that they are not evaluated for credit by the American Council of Education. They are evaluated by IACET for CEU's. I know that TESC will sometimes grant credit to courses that are not universally excepted at other colleges for credit.

The courses that I have completed are

Field Force Operations
Law Enforcement Protective Measures for CBRNE Incidents
Law Enforcement Response Actions for CBRNE Incidents
Intermediate Hands-on Training for CBRNE Incidents
Field Force Extrication Tactics
Initial Law Enforcement Response to Suicide Bomb Attacks

I know that some of these classes are granted credit at AMU and APU but it doesn't say what credits are awarded. I will be asking TESC, but first I would like to get an idea of what other people have been able to do.

Thank you for your time.
