Johanna, a heart murmur can be congenital (born with it) or acquired (usually develops after an illness). Most heart murmurs are benign, which means they are not problematic, they just exist. You can have a murmur all your life without a problem, then develop another issue that could make it worse. Some may be due to a faulty heart valve which can be replaced or repaired, depending on the problem. If you are having any types of issues with a significant, sudden change in your health or how you normally respond to normal exercise or stress, you should see your doctor. The last thing you want is a minor problem to turn into something far more serious because you let it go.
