scared of doctors... - STG - 03-14-2011 My mom and older 22 year old sister both have heart murmur...is that something you're born with or can it come later on in life too? Idk what heart murmur feels like but for the past month I've been getting heart cramps and I'm too scared to go check it out... If it is heart murmur, I can't do anything about it but what if it's not? scared of doctors... - marianne202 - 03-14-2011 Johanna, a heart murmur can be congenital (born with it) or acquired (usually develops after an illness). Most heart murmurs are benign, which means they are not problematic, they just exist. You can have a murmur all your life without a problem, then develop another issue that could make it worse. Some may be due to a faulty heart valve which can be replaced or repaired, depending on the problem. If you are having any types of issues with a significant, sudden change in your health or how you normally respond to normal exercise or stress, you should see your doctor. The last thing you want is a minor problem to turn into something far more serious because you let it go. Just remember you know your body better than anyone so if you think you have a problem seek out a doctor that will listen to your concerns. Good luck! scared of doctors... - blu2blu - 03-14-2011 If there is a problem ignoring it won't make it go away. If it's nothing or almost nothing then you will spend the rest of your life worrying when a simple Dr. visit could have alleviated everything. That lifetime of extra stress might do more damage than your mystery heart condition. Go to the doctor and be grateful that you can, many people in many places can only dream of health care. scared of doctors... - Firedup4Jesus - 03-14-2011 blu2blu Wrote:If there is a problem ignoring it won't make it go away. I hope it all turns out well. :-) scared of doctors... - STG - 03-14-2011 Thanks everyone I'll be calling the doctor tomorrow morning for a referral. scared of doctors... - april004 - 03-14-2011 A few years ago during my physical the doctor heard a heart murmur. An ecg was done. Turns out I have Mitral Valve Prolapse,so I have blood regurgitation. Explained alot about why I was more fatigued than some people in my marathon training group even when I put in more hours of training. Perhaps if I wasn't so active, I probably would never have noticed it. Despite that...I still am more active than most people. I participate in sports, am a personal trainer,dance...etc. So don't be scared! Do what someone recommended and see a doctor but having a heart murmur is actually very very common especially amongst women. You can still live your life normally. scared of doctors... - PonyGirl93 - 03-14-2011 I'm a murmur ((: I have bicuspid valve something-or-other, it's congenital. I'm supposed to go in for ECG's and EKG's every 5 yrs, but it has been a little longer than that since I've been in, I should go again soon. I don't look forward to it or anything but it really isn't that bad, it's just annoying to get all the sticky stuff off from the EKG. The ECG is kind of cool if they show you the picture. I do get benign chest pain more frequently than anyone else I know, apparently it comes with the territory, but that is definitely something you should talk about with a doctor, chest pain is nothing to BS around with. Take it from someone who hates going to the doctor, period, heart examinations really aren't that bad :coolgleam: scared of doctors... - STG - 03-15-2011 I made an appointment on Friday at 11...the doctor didn't want to give me a referral unless she checks me first... scared of doctors... - STG - 03-18-2011 I went today and the doctor claimed teenagers make up stuff but she gave me a referral scared of doctors... - Maniac Craniac - 03-18-2011 blu2blu Wrote:If there is a problem ignoring it won't make it go away. That lifetime of extra stress might do more damage than your mystery heart condition.:iagree: If it worries you, its best to get it checked out. The stress of not knowing, if prolonged could be enough to actually cause a psychophisiological disorder. You seem to be keenly aware of sensations in your body, which makes you more vulnerable to hypochondriasis. Hehe- am I ready for the abnormal psych exam or what? Uninvited nerdiness aside, it could be as serious as a murmur or as benign as heartburn. See the physician and get on with the rest of your happy and productive life. |
